More about Radisson SAS Hotel

radisson Edinburgh

by A TripAdvisor Member

Just returned from a weekend in Edinburgh staying at the Radisson on the Royal Mile. The hotel is excellent and the staff are friendly but there was just one problem. There are renovations are on-going at the moment so there was a bit noise in the mornings. Now this noise wasn't too bad and the renovations are nearly complete so don't let this put you off if you are intending to book into this hotel. They have a nice leisure centre consisting of a pool (which is quite small) with sauna, a fitness room and a weights room. Our rate was for room only so we didn't eat in the restaurant at all. They had the prices for breakfast displayed and they seemed excessive - up to 14stg - so we just went to cafes close by and got the same for less than half that. The location of the hotel is probably it's biggest selling point - it's on the Royal mile which is the heart of the tourist section in Edinburgh. But I wouldn't spend too much on accomodation because it's a lovely city to explore so you will be out during the day. For example the Ibis is just around the corner and there are also numerous other hotels around. If you are staying anywhere in the area between Princes St. or the Royal Mile you're on the right track. So to wrap up, it's a fine hotel in a good location but don't pay through the nose for it.

Stay if you get a good deal, otherwise try elsewhere

I stayed for a week in the Radisson and wasn't terribly impressed. The room was a good size although slightly dark due to the small window. The bed was comfortable and there was adequate storage, plus a small ironing board and iron. The bathroom was a bit dated, and the addition of a sliding screen to the side of the bath made bathing slightly unpleasant, as you are enclosed on either side. Leisure facilities are quite poor also.
Breakfast was fine, although I found the standard of food to be a very disappointing, although I was on a set menu so this may not be entirely applicable.
Hotel from the outside looks quite impressive and quaint. Location is good, on the Royal Mile, within walking distance to Arthur's Seat, the Castle, shopping area and Calton Hill (definately worth a walk). If you get a good price to stay at the Radisson then I would recommend it, however for a touch of class I would try another hotel such as the Carlton.

Dont Bother!

I booked a room here for our wedding anniversary. After waiting for over two hours in the lobby to book in, with our luggage, when other guests were not kept waiting my wife was in tears. The duty manager was not helpful, in fact he was boorish and rude. Following our stay I took them up on the offer of a full refund if you were not 100% satisfied with your stay. Needless to say I received a dismissive letter and no offer at all! We are not compulsive moaners, we expected much better. We wont be going anywhere near a Raddisson again.

Great Roo, Location, Staff.

We stayed one night in the NEW WING. Could not fault it. Great staff. Location as described in previous reviews. Some little noise but not an issue. The new rooms are great. A littly pricy @ £110 per night but had to get out of "Jurys". it was desperate. Well worth the money if you get a new room. Excellent customer service. Nice quiet restraunt with good menu.

Brilliant location and lovely staff

I stayed at the Radisson for just one night in a family room, I was with friends who stayed in a twin room. The family room was massive in fact it was really 2 very large rooms plus a corridor. It was at the front and so had brilliant views of the Royal Mile. The double glazing meant you could enjoy the view without the noise. My friends did have a much smaller room and unlike mine their room was very hot. In fairness the Hotel has just been fitted with air conditioning and this isn't switched on yet but the renovations finish soon so this shouldn't be a problem in the future.
The breakfast was very good and the service at breakfast was efficient and friendly. You can't fault the location everything is within easy reach and there is a taxi rank right outside so getting a taxi when you need one is simple.
Last year I stayed at the Carlton, I had a very grotty room that stank of smoke, mouldy tiles in the bathroom and very poor service. The Radisson is just across the road but in my view is a million miles away in terms of its service, rooms and staff. I'd definitely stay here again.

Average Accommodations--Great Location

by TripAdvisor Member The_TravelerUSA101

I recently stayed at the Radisson and felt they offered adequate (yet unspectacular) accommodations. The hotel location was the best aspect of my stay. If you are going to Edinburgh, I recommend staying somewhere on the Royal Mile. This stretch of the city contained most of the attractions worth seeing.

Overall, the Radisson is probably a 3-star hotel. The staff is average at best. The rooms are fairly large (my room had recently been renovated and the décor reminded me of a cheaper “W” style). The ongoing renovations seemed to upset overall services available at the hotel (they probably will be fully completed by the end of June). If you are able to obtain an excellent rate for this hotel (under $200 a night), then I would recommend a stay here. If not, go for one of the more upscale alternatives in the Old Town.

Edinburgh is a charming city. My overall visit was extremely enjoyable.

Nice restaurants

by clairegeordio

Hi
We are coming to Edinburgh for our first wedding anniversary and would like to book a nice restaurant in the centre of Edinburgh as we will have no transport when we are there. Does anyone have any recommendations for a place to go for a special evening meal please?
many thanks
Claire

Here is a few suggestions if you don't mind splashing out a bit;

The Witchery by the Castle
http://www.thewitchery.com/foodv3.html

The Tower Restaurant in the Museum of Scotland
http://www.tower-restaurant.com/index2.html

Oloroso on Castle St
http://www.oloroso.co.uk/htm/index.php

The Gallery Restaurant & Bar
http://www.searcys-scotland.com/

A bit out of the centre would be the following;

Martin Wishart
http://www.martin-wishart.co.uk/entrance.html

The Stockbridge Restaurant
0131 332 3864

If none of these seem suitable then many of the new bars along George St have seperate dining rooms (see my nightlife section for links to their websites).
