A Great Place to Stay in Edinburgh

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The staff was excellent. They stocked the kitchen with enough breakfast and snack items to tide us over until we could shop on our own. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the view from either side of the condo was pleasant, and we were close to Princes Street. Transportation was easy to find and the staff provided information on how to get around the city, where to find restaurants, and other advice we needed as tourists. Coffee and a pastry were available in the lobby in the morning and wine in the afternoon. Everyone was friendly and courteous--staff and other guests. We took advantage of having access to the private Queen Street garden. It was a peaceful, pleasant place to take a short walk. And, the Scottish Portrait Gallery was across with street. When we were there it had a fantastic café that opened for breakfast and lunch. It was packed with regular customers so get there when it opens! (Online information states that the gallery is closed and will reopen in 2011.) If we go back to Edinburgh we will stay at the Royal Garden Apartments again.

Unique Quality: The most outstanding feature was the friendly staff and the kitchen essentials such as fruit, milk, coffee, and shortbread!

More about Royal Garden Apartments

Fabulous Apartments

by A TripAdvisor Member

We spend two nights at the Royal Garden Apartments in a high-ceilinged, beautifully furnished apartment. (Other reviews correctly describe the amenities; the convenience of the free do-it-yourself laundry can't be emphasized enough, however.) The staff is great and could not be more cheery and helpful: as others have mentioned, Maureen and Brenda stand out for special mention.

This place is an excellent value and well situated for the visitor, being close to Waverley Station and the attractions of Hanover and Princes Street and a short walk to the Castle, the Royal Mile, Grassmarket, etc.

I will go out of my way to stay in Edinburgh again (maybe foregoing exorbitant London altogether), and Royal Garden Apartments will be my choice of lodging without a doubt.

Loved the Royal Garden Apt.

Everything the previous posters say is true and More. It is a Great apartment - we had 2 bed. 2 bath, kitchen/living/dining room ... with all amenities - across the street from the portrait museum - You can walk to Waverly Station - and everything is so close.
There is an airport bus at Waverly that runs every 10 mins - 3 pounds one way -
so whether you fly or take the train into Edinburgh ----
the Royal Garden Apartments are the best location and value... Staff was so friendly and accomodating - Just wish we could have stayed longer...

I loved the Royal Garden Apartments

I stayed in the Royal Garden Apartments for two nights over the weekend of 19th May 2006. They were excellently located and amazingly comfortable. The apartment was extremely well equipped. I would recommend these apartments to anybody. It made such a difference to have an apartment instead of just a hotel room to go back to after a wet day of sightseeing. The staff were friendly and helpful and the apartment was spotlessly clean.

We had a fantastic stay earlier this month. We were given a free upgrade to a penthouse apartment, and reception organised a lovely basket of flowers on request. The staff were very helpful, booking taxis and helping with queries.

The apartment was in excellent condition and very comfy. The bathrobes were a nice touch, along with the milk which meant we weary travellers could have a nice cup of tea on arrival!

The free internet access is extremely handy, and the complimentary breakfast muffins delicious. Free DVD loan was great for a wet evening.

This is our third stay at the apartments and each time we have thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Nice space, very large units, and clean. Great location - 10 minute walk to Old Town. Plenty of great restaurants within 5-10 minute walking distance. Friendly staff. Nice, simple continental breakfast in AM, wine in afternoons. Would stay there again!

Beware the UP GRADE>>

We reserved our room 5 months prior to our arrival. Confirmed with the hotel, via several emails that assured us we would have a One Bedroom Superior Apartment. Room to have either King bedroom or two twin beds. With Smoking. We wanted to make sure we could have the right room and did not want one of the lesser units. If we could not be accommedated we would look else where for a reservation. We were to stay a total of 5 days. Our flight arrived late in the evening. We did not arrive at the hotel until around 8 P.M.
They stated that they were completely booked up, and that they had upgraded us to a two bedroom apartment. We thought how nice. We had read about the other reveiws of the upgaded apartements and had seen the pictures of the two bedroom apartments.
Well, there was a reason this unit was still available. The bedrooms were about 8X8 and had a single double bed. Double beds are shorter than the twins and kings.
At 6' 4" I had to sleep in the bed cross ways, let alone was my girlfriend going to sleep in the bed with me. Thia was not going to make for a very ROMANTIC TRIP. When we contacted the desk and stated our displeasure with the room, they stated that the room was all that was available. That the hotel was completely booked all week and that they would try to move us. We advised them that we would then be checking out tomorrow and staying else where. They then tried to play a strong arm on us, by stating that we would have to pay for each night they could not rent our room. I advised them that they did rent our room already, and showed them the confirmation emails from the manager. We argued about this for a few minutes until he understood that I would not allow the charges to be put on my credit card. I paid cash for the room.
A few other notes about the hotel. Carpets were filty and the furniture in the sitting room had stains on them. The hotel is located on busy Queen Street. So it is very loud with vehicle traffic. The walk to the Royal Mile is approx. 25 Min. Up hill. It is not right next door as they would have you believe. We found the Radisson SAS right on The Royal Mile to be very close to everything and had helpful staff. At 20 pounds or 40 dollars more well worth the extra price.
We stayed at several different hotel while in Scotland we found when they say we have upgraded you. This really means we have the last lousy room left for you that no one else wanted. My advise get to your hotel early and get a choice of rooms.

Royal Garden Apartments are brilliant

by TripAdvisor Member bonvau1025

We recently stayed in the Royal Garden Apartments in Edinburgh and had a brilliant experience. Our party included 2 adults and 2 children. We searched in vain for a hotel room big enough for 4 people Edinburgh and were almost ready to book two rooms when we came across the Royal Garden Apartments. We were able to book a two bedroom apartment at a price comparable to one decent hotel room. When we arrived, the staff was very friendly and welcoming, especially to the kids (definitely a rarity in the UK). Our apartment was very large, comfortable and well-equipped. The kids had lots of room to spread out and especially enjoyed several rousing games of 'hide the haggis' (hide and seek with a stuffed animal haggis). There were complimentary laundry facilitiies available for the guests, as well as dvds to borrow. The kitchen was fully equipped and breakfast muffins and fruit were provided free each morning as well as a welcome glass of wine each evening. The location was great - in a very nice quiet area close to shops and restaurants. The beds were soft and the kitchens and baths were sparkly and clean. The carpets could use a good scrub, but other than that - it was terrific.

Highly recommended apartments right in centre of Edinburgh

by TripAdvisor Member bondchick

We stayed in the Royal Garden Apartments for a girly weekend and it was definitely value for money. There were 3 adults and one child in our party and the apartments were spacious, modern and clean. The kitchen even had milk, coffee and tea for our arrival. The beds were really comfortable and the bed linen was clean and we were definitely tired after walking the cobbled streets of the old town. The staff were really friendly and very welcoming. The apartments were a good base to go sightseeing and were only a short walk from Princes Street where there are all the major shops, you can get a bus to visit the Royal Britannia and catch the tour bus to go up to the Castle. Also Marks and Spencers food hall and Sainsburys are only a short walk for all your provisions to stock up the fridge. Would highly recomend the apartments to anyone both families and couples.

Great place to stay, highly recommended!!

We spent 6 nights at the Royal Garden, the first three with our adult daughter, so booked a 2-bedroom apartment at the very reasonable rate of 135GBP. It was perfect, so much more comfortable than a couple of hotel rooms at twice the price! We loved it and would highly recommend it, particularly for long stays or groups of 3 or more.

The living / dining area, main bedroom and bath were all very spacious. Second bedroom was smaller, but adequate. Tons of closet space. Everything was spotlessly clean (although the carpeting is showing its age) and the kitchen was well-appointed. An iron and board, and vacuum cleaner, are also provided in the hall closet, and there is a free laundry room (soap provided) on the second floor. All the other nice little touches are there too - hairdryer, retractable clothesline in the bath, safe, alarm clocks, TV with DVD player, etc.

An espresso machine is available at all times in the lobby; muffins (ok, not great) and fresh fruit are provided in the morning and wine from 5:30-6:30 pm. There's also a PC for free internet access.

The location is very convenient, a couple blocks from the bus station and Harvey Nichols, and not much farther to Waverly Bridge (city and tour buses) and the train station. There are several nice restaurants in the area and both Sainsbury's and Marks & Spencer for groceries.

Staff were friendly and helpful, available at all hours. I would definitely return here, it was one of the nicest, most comfortable places we've stayed anywhere.
