scotch-whisky follow THE malt whiskey trail

by stjomopaul

We are considering a trip that we hope will involve the so-called Whisky Trail. We are thinking about between a week and ten days in early May of this year (2007).

Any information regarding a route for such a trip, along with suggested hotels and resturants on the way would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

I would take a look at www.maltwhiskeytrail.com

It has a bunch of resources including a list of hotels you can stay in and which stops you will take along the trail itself.

Well, 7-10 days is just perfect. We did that a few years ago, and it is doable. Take your time for visits at the whisky-houses, but after a while they all seem the same, so just focus on the shops and the 'tasting' :-).
For hotels : look for some bed-and-breakfast accomodations. The best way to explore the region, having direct contact with the locals... Have fun !

I would recommend making a big detour to Islay for one of their distilleries and also the Isle of Skye (Talisker). Don't just stay within the Eastern Highlands, there is more to discover both in terms of whisky and scenery!

Travel Tips for Edinburgh

Relaxing in East Princes Street Gardens

by Packerman

Our family often took an afternoon break next to the Scott Monument. There are plenty of benches and grassy areas to sit and relax. We fed the pidgeons every day which really entertained our two children. We took old bread with us every day and the pidgeons landed right on our daughters hand to eat. I still have that picture, quite amazing and funny. A beautiful place with hundreds of flowers, a great landscape, and a great view of the castle and much more.

Story of half-hangit Maggie

by Dabs

There's a pub in the Grassmarket called Maggie Dickson's, near where the gallows used to stand. Maggie Dickson was hanged here for the crime of concealing the death of her prematurely born, illegitimate child. After her hanging, the dead body was placed in a coffin and put in a cart for the trip to be buried near where she lived. Enroute, noises were heard coming from inside the coffin, apparently the hangman had not properly checked to see if she was really and truly dead. She made a full recovery and after some legal squabbling, the opinion was rendered that someone who had already been pronounced dead could not be hanged again. She lived for another 30 years became known as "Half-Hangit Maggie".

princes street gardens

by dotshand

princes street gardens is right in the heart of the city centre and are lovely big gardens, at lunchtimes/evenings you get office workers, tourists sitting in the gardens enjoying lunch/picnic. There is a large bandstand and usually during the festival acts/bands perform there

Not sure if this is really off...

by Bagillbaer

Not sure if this is really off the beaten path... but I suppose so... anyway, this is about The Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh.
It's basically just your normal botanic garden (not that I'm an expert tho...), and as most botanic gardens it is just nice and enjoyable to walk through it.
Especially the Glasshouse Experience is very worthwhile (just like you'd expect your visit in a glasshouse to be). Photography is at times a bit of a problem in there - spectacle wearers also might want to take this advice to heart: Don't run, especially not when passing one of the glass doors!
Some new chambers hold a lot of hot humidity and also fish ponds...

I shall scan some pix of our visit to the majestic flowery plantation soon - hang on.

"3-Sisters"

by mckillop19 about Cowgate

This place is a bit of a "meat market" but its a fun place for drinks and a boogie. On a nice night its great to stand outside or if you're lucky get a table. If you don't want to run into groups of people (usually English or Irish) on a stag/hen night then avoid this place. Casual - but a bit dressier on a Fri/Sat night
