SONNY BEAN
by hevbell
I took this photo years ago at an event at Culzean. Sawney Bean, so the story goes, was a local cannibal who lived in a cave near Lendalfoot [south of Girvan] way back in the 1600s. Him and his family supposedly used to rob passers by and then eat their flesh, until being captured and taken to Edinburgh for execution! Gruesome story but there is no actual proof it ever happened!
FAILFORD GORGE
by hevbell
Another place where you can walk along the River Ayr is at the small hamlet of Failford between Ayr and Mauchline. You can park in the village and follow the paths down through the gorge and then head back up to the Failford Inn for some refreshments when you are done! I've been a couple of times and its a nice walk
This is also another place with a link to Burns. It was here that he said goodbye to "Highland Mary" and the memorial on the small hill behind the hamlet commenmorates this
AYR BEACH & PROMENADE
by hevbell
This area has undergone something of a revamp in recent years with new kids playgrounds and other stuff. There is also mini & crazy golf and a gorgeous sandy beach. The promenade is great for inline skating or cycling especially if you head for the quieter Seafield end. Soon as the sun makes an appearance you can see everyone swarming here!!
There is a fair amount of free parking including a large car park.
Ayr, Scotland
by Raquelle
I went to Ayr on holiday in October 2005. My boyfriend and I stayed at the Haven holiday park located just outside the town. Despite the time of year and with Scotland notorious for having bad weather we actually had good weather for the week. We visited a few things of interest to others which I will hope to write up about on here.
