LOCH DOON CASTLE
The most inteeresting feature at Loch Doon is the ruin of the castle, once known as Balliol Castle but now Loch Doon Castle.
Originally it was situated on Castle Island in the middle of the loch. However in the 1930s a hydro-electric scheme meant that that the island was submerged and the castle - already a ruin - was reconstructed at the side of the loch out of harms way.
The castle was the ancient seat of the Lords of Carrick and is first documented in 1306 under the guardianship of Sir Gilbert de Carrick and has a stormy history involving having been taken by the English during the Wars of Independence. Robert the Bruce is believed to have visited there when he was in the area and the castle was owned by supporters of his.
Its an unusual polygonal shape with one long wall and several shorter ones. Although it was orginally 4 floors high very little now remains. Its now owned by Historic Scotland and entry is free.
