Ferries from Ayr to the islands

by tullemor1

My husband and I have fallen completely in love with the TV series "10000 acres of sky" and would like to go an island like that some time this spring.

Are there any ferries (or boats, we are not bringing a car) from Ayr to for example the island of Skye or another (may be smaller) island. And does these islands have B&Bs so we can stay there overnight?.

We are arriving via Prestwick Airport approximately around 2 p.m.

Your nearest island would be Arran but the ferry only goes from Ardrossan - just north of Prestwick. Arran is oten called "Scotland in Miniature" and has some stunning scenery. Lots of B&Bs. Also you can take the local bus around the island. Click on www.calmac.co.uk for ferries to islands. Without a car I think it is possible to get to Ardrossan from Prestwick but would involved a change of train at, possibly, Kilmarnock. Will have a check and let you know.

Was that the series with Michelle Collins and that cockney geezer?

If it was, then the series was not filmed on an island. In fact it was filmed near Stranraer,on the Rhinn of Galloway. Portpatrick,I think. Its a very lovely part of Scotland, but firmly attached to the mainland :-)

You would probably need a car to get to Portpatrick - check Traveline Scotland.

Hi,
You would need to go to kilwinning to change trains for Ardrossan see http://www.scotrail.co.uk/rtmap1.htm and http://www.scotrail.co.uk/rtmap2.htm.

Arran is a nice island.

2000 acres of Skye was not actually filmed on an island at all. It was filmed on the south west coast of Scotland on the Mull of Galloway, I know Port Patrick was the "mainland" port in the series and also a lot of filming took place at Port Logan. This area is about 70 miles south of Prestwick airport.

Travel Tips for Ayr

LOCH DOON

by hevbell

This Loch, situated in the Galloway Forest Park near Dalmellington, is not one of the prettiest in Scotland but its an area of Scientific interest due the rare Char fish which are present here and is also a major reservoir for the Ayrshire area. Its 5½ miles by 1½ miles. There is a ruined castle at the side of the Loch and you can still ocassionally - when the water level is lower - see the island in the middle of the loch where the castle was originally situated.
Free fishing for trout and char. There are plenty hiking trails in the area but its pretty remote countryside so be careful

Alloway Auld Kirk

by zizkov

Where Tam O'Shanter espied the witches carousing.

The now ruined kirk is set amidst a greveyard. A Burns family gravestone is at the forefront.

The current Alloway kirk, a modest but well proportioned stone building, is across the road.

ROZELLE HOUSE

by hevbell

The main house at Rozelle is home to a long running exhibition called the Goudie Collection. It is actually a series of paintings that illustrate the story behind the "Tam O'Shanter" poem written by Robert Burns - I think there are about 22 in total & its well worth a visit.
