Travel Tips for Glasgow
UGC Unlimited card
by cadja
If you're gonna live here for at least a year (study/work?), am a filmlover and/or don't have a tv I'd advice you to get an UGC Unlimited card. For 9.99 pounds a month you get to watch as many movies as you like. Minimum subscription is 12 months. A regular ticket cost about 3.50 as a student (4.50 for adults) so if you're a regular movie goer you do the math.
UGC doesn't only show blockbusters but on some of the 18 (!) screens more "arty" once as well. *sigh* Once back in Stockholm and the 6 pound tickets I do miss this card...
Eating Haggis: A local dish
by RawdgerDodger
If you have seen Highlander with Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert maybe you remember the scene where the Highlander Connery rips on the Highlander Lambert for eating Haggis.
Haggis is a traditional Scottish dish made out of the heart, liver and lungs. Haggis is traditionally served with "neeps and tatties" or better known as turnips and potatoes. The haggis I ate was mashed and cut into little pieces and was black. I found the local dish after wandering into a Bar on Buchannen St. The haggis I ordered and ate was served with some type of large barley and two types of mashed items. One of these side items I am sure was mashed potatoes and the other was probably mashed turnip. With some gravey and some Peary ciders to wash it down, it was actually a tasty meal.
Rangers Football Club
by NYC2TLV
Situated just south of the Clyde River is Ibrox Stadium, home to Rangers Football Club. The club is one of the two largest clubs in Scotland and are part of the Old Firm (derby between Celtic and Rangers). A football match is a great way to spend a night in Glasgow. First there are many pubs situated around the stadium. These are great places to get to know the supporters of Rangers and have a good laugh. Then proceed to the stadium. Purchase tickets in advance. I was able to get a ticket for £25.
If you can not arrange to see a match while you are there, the club also offers guided tours of the stadium providing you with a tour guide who can explain the clubs history.
Stirling
by husain
Stirling- one of Scotlands former capitals, is one of its most historic cities as well, with a lot of tales of battles and struggles for Scottish independence centred around the region. Its was also home to the famous William `braveheart' Wallace and `Robert the Bruce'. The Stirling castle is one of the most evocative castles i`ve seen to date...
Several coaches/busses run between Stirling and Glasgow. There is the option of taking the train as well, which would genrally be quicker.
If you choose to drive down yourself, the M80 is probably the quikest option between the two cities
Rated intop10 worlds clubs by N.Y. mag
by lillibets about King tuts Wah Wah HUt
Rated by New York magazine as"in the worlds top ten of must see clubs" and "on a par with the best in New York." it also does a really nice pub lunch and i went in not only to the theatre which if you measure a club by the lighting racks it must be a toasty warm oven in full swing but also mistaked the ladies restroom and had a personal glimpse of the famous {amongst gents } WONDERWALL. Ho ,Ho, Ho. Never seen anything quite the like. If that is your music style no doubt you bright young things will have a blast..The real pattie Kingburger on the lunch menu was incidently THE BEST burger i have had out side the states.
The lunch menu is eclectic and varied but the venue really kicks off in the evening when the music plays.
Sunday afternoon ,the first of the month there is a great session where the wannabees and gonnabees can have their music played and gauged. This is for non signed artists.
Oasis are amongst the groups discovered here. Varies
