For SECC and Clyde Auditorium

Have not stayed as I have never lived any more than a 20 minutes or less cab ride away from the venue, but have had dinner and lunch and attended probably two dozen seminars and trade shows over the years, mostly when the hotel was the Glasgow Moat House. In fact, my wife and I were the models in the late 1990s for the restaurant's promo literature

Unique Quality: It is right beside the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, SECC, www.secctickets.com, and also the Clyde Auditorium, an architectural copy of Sydney opera house, and the only part of the SECC purpose built for concerts.

Also just across the Bells footbridge over the Clyde to Pacific Quay, where there is the new HQ for BBC Scotland and also Scottish Television stv adjacent.

Crowne Plaza?

Seems to be a Crowne Plaza now, but the fabric had not caught up with the brand when I was there (May 06). Rooms looked a bit tired.

Location very good. Close to motorways etc. On Clydeside, and quiet at weekends. I went on a good run before breakfast and enjoyed it. Couldn't have done that in city centre.

Unique Quality: Location at conference centre, and beside river.

Bad Example of Scottish Hotels

by TripAdvisor Member TirotaiTelegraph

The hotel room was very dirty, e.g. thick dust on the shelf inside the wardrobe and the aircon vents were full of accumulated dust.
The staff were very friendly but the management treated them very badly in sight and sound of guests.
Great views from the room but not a good location.

Worst ever hotel experience

by TripAdvisor Member dpglasgow

A hotel with a good location and river views - but freezing rooms! We'd booked a suite for an anniversary celebration and the temperature was so low we didn't want to remove our coats. The bedroom was just about bearable but the bathroom and sitting room were like a fridge. Thinking the heating had just been put on, we waited to see if the temperature would improve. After an hour it didn't, so we asked for another room. We were shown two other rooms (one unsuitable - single beds) and both were equally chilly. Each time we had to bring our baggage up and down and wait around for assistance. We decided we'd had enough - by this time had lost that celebratory feeling we'd arrived with. We told the receptionist the hotel wasn't up to the standard we'd expected and that we wanted to check out. But the manager refused to refund our money on the grounds that it was now after 4pm! (4.20, to be precise - we'd spent over an hour waiting and being shuttled up and down in the lift!) They offered us a discount and a small additional heater for one room. We weren't impressed - we hadn't booked a suite in order to huddle round an electric fan heater. We left in disgust, £139 poorer and very angry. Avoid this hotel if you want to be comfortable and if you believe a hotel should respect your consumer rights. Glasgow has lots of hotels that would treat you better - The Marriot, The Hilton, the Holiday Inn. Or for the best of all, go to any of the Apex Hotels in Edinburgh.

Great stay

Spent Hogmanay with the Kids as they had special facilities for families on new years eve. Not many places do this, so pleasantly surprised and will come again. Fantastic buffet with entertainer and disco but also with the pipers etc.Breakfast very busy but that was most probably because most people left it till the last moment before coming down!Hotel currently going through refurbishment.

A lot of work to do to be a credible Crowne Plaza

by A TripAdvisor Member

Stayed four nights in connection with event at adjacent SEEC. Hotel in process of re-branding exercise but it has a lot of work to do to be taken as a serious contender for a Crowne Plaza branding.

The first room had an armchair with missing foot, defunct reading lamp and an unuseable hanging rail. Duty manager promptly and apologetically moved me. Rooms seem very tired looking and have inexcusably minimal lighting -only place to read is in the bathroom.

Food is at best variable with buffet breakfast being passable with wide choice. However, the evening carvery was woeful; certainly not to be repeated. Room service expensive, poor value and choice and not always anyone to answer the call. Definitely not an advert for Scottish culinary achievement.

Much promise and hype but a paucity of delivery. All in all a hotel best avioded until Crowne Plaza bring it kicking and screaming into proper service delivery standards.

avoid this overpriced hotel

stayed here twice before . Each time have tried to charge for mini bar not taken. Upper floors have been refurbed but still 60s style air conditioning thats very noisy and windows that dont open service poor and beds very hard Not worth the money

Not Crowne Plaza Standard although using it's branding

by TripAdvisor Member wonga

We also stayed for an event at the SECC. The first room had a fabulous view down the Clyde and over the city but that's all it had going for it.
The wardrobe door was full of splinters and the space not enough to hang clothes without them coming into contact with the splinters at the risk of damaging your clothes. Air vents were filthy as was floor and bathroom.
In the middle of them removing the wardrope doors and leaving me with an open wardrobe!!!!, the fire bell rang and so down 14 flights of stairs.
O.K.This can happen but other guests who have stayed before told us that every year for 7 years, the same thing has happened during their stay.
Anyway, we were moved to one of the new rooms on the 1st floor next day. The room decor was lovely but the standard of cleanlieness was jsut as bad as the other rooms.
We returned that night to find bins not emptied, mini bar area still with dirty cups and teabags, ashtrays still full, bed all askew and towels still on the chair from that morning.
Given that we were already complaining strongly they could have done better.
Anyway, we went to dinner and the room had been serviced.
Next day they left a small bottle of hot bubbly which would have been a nice gesture had they not left it on the floor and with bins still not emptied, soap and shampoo still unchanged.
In 4 days the bed linen was not changed.
A pathetic and dirty hotel which is no way near Crowne Plaza standards.
Will be lovely when it's been refurbished but until the end of 2006 I would refrain from going there.

you'll go hungry and thirsty waiting

by TripAdvisor Member scotbhoy7

when we waited 20 mins in the check in q we were told dinner not available at this hotel as they already had a function on and were fully booked. there was only 1 bar and 2 staff and they were run off there feet. the phone in the room was thick with dust and because of the lighting the water in the bathroom looks yellow (lovely) we booked a suite but the bedroom was very small and the lounge only average, we ordered room service , it never came , when i called again the girl on the phone took down the wrong room number , breakfast the next morning and we que'd for 45 mins to get a table for breakfast. there were no staff to clear tables on the breakfast bar there was food everywhere that resembled a chimps tea party. disgusting honestly . we complained and were told the hotel was full and there was nothing they could do but apologise. this place makes basil faultys management look profesional total joke

Service Bad and cleanliness terrible

by A TripAdvisor Member

Stayed at this hotel with our company as participated at exhibition in SECC. Bedroom decor very tired with horrible smell. hairs on sheets; dust on every surface and hairs all over bathroom. One of the lights did not work and just generally not a comfortable environment.
Had to wait 20 mins for service at the bar in the evening and staff there were all over the place, no system. Ordered room service; never turned up and eventually cancelled. Had breakfast to the room; cutlery, plates and cups all dirty and food was basic...could not eat.
I would definitely never stay in this hotel again...website misleading with photos even though under refurn they are robbing people because of location. The minute you walk through the door you feel like you are in a zoo with too many things packed into the reception area. All in all it tacky, dirty and the management need to seriously over haul everything and put service systems in place as no way is a 4 star. Dump is the word
