Polish love affair with glasgow .What is this?

by paulis

So many visitors from Poland are in Glasgow what is the route.I know there is a lot of Poles in great Britain but they have an uncanny affection for the city of Glasgow. What am i missing?

Re: Polish love affair with glasgow .What is this?

by hawkhead

Can't tell you precisely but there has been a very long historical association between Scotland and Poland, so may be there is something in that.

There are lots of Poles all over the UK just now. There are big numbers in Inverness and the Highlands too. As far as Glasgow is concerned, it's a city and that's where the work tends to be. Glasgow also has a large population of of people who are "economically inactive" or in other words, unemployed or on long term sickness benefits. The bottom line - the Poles work when others do not. It is also true that there has been a Polish community in Scotland for a long time, though during my lifetime it has been hard to identify, having been largely absorbed by the majority community. Many industrial and mo=ining towns (when there were such things) had Polish communities, but I guess as industry has declined, communities have become more dispersed and therefore less visible.

James many Poles and especially Lithuanians settled in my town. They came to work in the steelworks after the first WW. I could count almost 20 families and all without exception took Scottish/Irish names.

Travel Tips for Glasgow

Glasgow Tip

by StirCrazy

My fondest memory of student life was... escaping from the city (well, it's different when you're trapped there in a miserable little bedsit!!!) Glasgow is well-placed for the occasional jaunt to Loch Lomond out to the north west, the Trossachs to the north east and the Clyde and Ayrshire coasts. And, should you make it to the resort of Largs.. you simply MUST visit Nardini's (?) Ice Cream Parlour.

Pack for all weathers!!

by kritur

A good sized waterproof bag, wheels are good as city centre is fairly well paved so it's easy to wheel your bag. Bring a variety of clothing, layers especially as the weather can be very changeable. Bring a couple of different types of shoes as well as it can get pretty wet even in summer. In winter it is an overcoat colder in Glasgow than even teh north of England, bring a hat, gloves and scarf. Everything available locally

It Takes A Very Brave Man To Take This Picture!

by scotlandscotour

A photograph that half the population (at least) will never see - the mens toilets.

It takes a brave (or foolish) man to take a photograph in mens toilets - but I thought you'd appreciate it -

Here you can see how clean they are (at 10 am) and they were free. Public toilets are a wonderful thing - if they are free, you should at least leave a gratuity, to ensure they continue.

(This one is unusually clean).
