Good value
This is not a big or fancy hotel, but one which almost perfectly fits what I want – small with a friendly staff, good breakfast, well located, clean beds and bathroom and reasonably priced. Our room was pretty large with a desk and chair, coffee and tea tray, television and our own heat control. The breakfast was traditional full English which I like and served in one nice little room and another that was very attractive. I don’t carry a laptop when traveling, but they offer free wi-fi. There are also two TV lounges available. We were able to walk to the pedestrian center of the city in about 10 minutes and in doing so passed Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Glasgow School of Art just down the street from McLay’s.
£56 per night including breakfast, twin en-suite.

Convenient location
My friend stayed here for one night. The price seemed good and the location was conveniently close to the city centre and busy Sauchiehall street.
The building made quite and impression as it looked like a gigantic maze and had an almost "Suspiria"-like quality, for the fans of Dario Argento.
Unique Quality: The room was nice and the traditional breakfast substantial. Good quality for the price.
The day staff was nice but I am quite concerned with the night receptionist as, when we arrived at the hotel around one o'clock, the tv was on, facing the door, and showed an "over-18" movie, if you see what I mean...okay, it's gonna be a great private joke for the next few years, but it's not nice.

A great Guesthouse!
Me and my friend stayed for 3 nights at Mclays Guest House in Glasgow in early August 2004.
My feeling is that it was a great guest house, centrally located just one street off the busy Sauchiehall street with all its bars and shops.
It was clean, well-managed and the staff was rather friendly. (Or, ALL of the staff but one person was very friendly, the exception being one man in the reception who seemed very stressed).
A double room with Ensuite facilities was 52 pounds and that is about average what you'd expect to pay I'd say.
They do a full scottish breakfast with pancakes, beans, egg and hot tomato, but also tea, coffee, toast, cereal and stuff.

Good location
I have been several times at this place over 5 or 6 years and again this year in May. My comment: it really needs a facelift. Everything seems to get more and more shabby (it never was a luxury place, but what can you expect in the UK at this rate?), but now just about everything - from staff to breakfast, toilets and cleanliness etc.- seems to hae deteriiorated a lot. I will be back next year, hopefully there will be some improvements or...I am going to switch to another place.
Unique Quality: Good location, 15 mins walk to Central Station, 10 mins to the Sauchiehall pedestrian zone and many nightspots nearby

Fantastic Accommodation - Fantastic Location
If you're venturing up to Glasgow do as we did and stay at McClays Guest House (you can reserve on-line with www.hostelworld.com). It's in a really convenient location, on Refrew Street, just off of Sauchiehall Street in the centre of the city - fantastic for access to anywhere that you might want to visit - and they do a cracking 'Full Scottish'... Good location, good price (for the UK) and very friendly staff!

McLays Guest House.
Comfortable and value for money. Not far from the center which is within walking distance. But will have to climb the steep slopes to return after shopping.
Unique Quality: Comfortable (not luxurious) rooms with central heating. Clean. Heating is still working when I went in July. It was still cold then.
