    Glasgow's American Football Hotel

    by

I stayed at the Thistle Hotel in May 2004 for about 3 weeks and couldn't be more happy with my stay. The rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable and the staff was pleasantly accommodating. Off of the lobby, there is a pool and day spa which is a nice touch and relatively vacant.

The Thistle Glasgow is centrally located and one block from Sauchiehall Street (pronounced Saki-hall) which is one of the main shopping drags. In addition, Sauchiehall is a pedestrian only street that creates an environment with little to no traffic noise (ie. honking, accidents, general car noises) and a bustling location to sightsee around.

There is a movie theater on the corner of Renfrew and Hope Street (about 3 blocks from the Thistle) that has the BEST candy selection I've ever seen in a movie theater.

Unique Quality: The Scottish Claymores (NFL Europe Team) was staying at the Thistle at the same time I was. If it's good enough for the NFL...it's good enough for me!

Directions: Corner of Rose street and Renfrew Street

Fantastic Service

Staff fantastic at the Thistle Hotel Glasgow. From Check In to Check Out service was extremely good. Bedrooms were spotless, food was excellent and the leisure facilities ideal for a perfect leisure stay. Would recommend this hotel to anybody.

Overall, a nice place

by TripAdvisor Member pnutfan

We stayed at the Thistle Glasgow for 8 days in July 2005. Good downtown location close to many shops and restuarants. The hotel staff was friendly. The room and bathroom were clean and the bed comfortable. The tub is very deep and one had to be careful stepping in and out. The black and white decor of the bathroom was very appealing. Minimal amount of channels from which to choose on the television. Nice exercise room, pool, and jacuzzi.
The breakfast buffet was good with a wide selection of foods....cereal, eggs, sausage, bacon, haggis, muffins, croissants (very tasty!!), fresh fruits, tomatoes, juices. tea, coffee and more. We never waited to be seated, and we ate breakfast every day at varying times as the buffet runs from 7am to 10am.
We never ate dinner in the restuarant, but did have a couple of meals in the lounge which were quite delicious (hamburgers, wraps, bruschetta appetizer, etc...). The lounge offered a special (your choice of steak, cajun chicken, or burger with a free drink) on the 4th of July which was one of the best meals I had in Scotland. There were a wide variety of drinks available and the lounge staff was friendly.
My biggest complaint was having to walk through the cigarette smoked-filled lobby everytime I entered the hotel. The lobby was also cold. There was usually a wait for the one elevator as the other was being repaired.

Fab Hotel.

We have just returned from a night at Thistle Glasgow. Being from Glasgow, we werent there to see the sights as I see them a lot! We were just there for a night out and a relaxing atmosphere.

The Hotel exterior is well lit and nice but nothing of architectural greatness.
The Lobby is clean and very modern as is the restaurant.

We had a non smoking room on the 5th floor and it was very spacious and clean with A luxurious bed, TV, table, 2 Armchairs, mini bar and a gorgeous bathroom and all the other amenities we required.

The air-con was great as was the rest of the room, our only complaint was that our room overlooked onto a very noisy street.

We had intended to have breakfast in our room but we didnt get the order out by 2am so we had the buffet breakfast in the restaurant. We got there at 10:15 (breakfast is served until 10:30) and there was still plenty of food left and it was still being replenished.

Overall, we had a lovely stay at Thistle and I would definitely return.

Avarage Thistle

Stayed at the Thistle on the 11 May. We had smoking rooms on the 8th floor which we were given without discussion, which was situated by the main hotel air con vent. It was dark and dingy, made worse by the fact that my bed had no pillow cases showing the less than clean pillows and the bathrooms were tatty. I was moved without fuss and the room on the third floor was far more pleasent even though the bathroom was still a little worn. Breakfast was uninspiring and for the price I felt let down. However the bed was fab, very comfy and I slept really well.
For a great clean cheap room try the Express by Holiday Inn- excellent value and just round the corner however breakfast should be eaten out.

Dirty Room - Poor Service

by TripAdvisor Member pippywippy

Large room (Premier Executive) on seventh floor - stayed two nights May 2005.

Room: Hairs on bathroom floor, carpet not properly vacuumed. Skirting boards grubby. Windows had grease marks. Bedding clean. Room very tired. Toiletries not replenished on second day. Toilet roll not replaced. TV speaker in bathrobe not working. No extractor fan in windowless bathroom.

Breakfast: Slow service - took ten minutes to get a coffee. Certain items not available (awaiting cooking) e.g. no eggs one day, no hash browns the next. Unhygenic Tables made of wood with large (crumb/grease)collecting grooves

Lobby/Reception: Smoking was allowed in this area making it unsuitable for relaxing and reading a newspaper. Confusing procedure upon checking out. Will have to wait for credit card bill to see if I have been charged twice

Hotel Location: Central but surrounded by concrete jungle. Hotel itself, dated and unsightly. No architectural merit

Concierge: of no help - too young and inexperienced for the job

This room was meant to have complimentary bathrobe/slippers. No robe in room so I rang reception straight away, they said they would get housekeeping to sort it immediately. Forty-eight hours later still no robe - (despite telling reception three times) didn’t particularly want it but didn't want to be charged for it upon vacating. Was surprised no mini bar

Would not recommend this grubby hotel

Acceptable

Stayed for one night on business - arrived late and was out by 9am the following morning. Had to phone the hotel to get them to open the entrance to the car park (the entrance is at the rear) which was a bit of a hassle, but to be fair somebody came down quite quickly and at least I knew the parking was secure. Room was comfortable enough, but would have benefitted from a comfortable chair or a sofa - there was enough room. The air-con didn't seem to work. Breakfast was busy with around 8 people in front waiting to be seated when I arrived (coach trips as far as I could make out). Overall not the best hotel I've ever stayed in in Glasgow but not bad, either.

A disgrace to Glasgow

by TripAdvisor Member dozybint

My husband and I stayed at the Thistle while attending a graduation ball - the room was tiny and not 4* at all it was a struggle for us both to get ready for the ball on time as the check in held us up for over an hour - maintenance also had to be called to put light bulbs in the room which took another hour ... we found a porn magazine in the room in one of the beds !!! and the bathroom was filthy - generally the whole place was shabby and run down ... during the ball the bar tried to charge our table for the drinks of another 3 tables around us and were very angry at us pointing out that although there were only 10 of us on our table we had been charged for 30 drinks !!! no apology forthcoming and took ages to sort out - breakfast was a shambles - the restaurant was dingy and they had 2 chefs on cooking for hundreds of people - it was a buffet style but people were queued up waiting for well over half an hour in a line with plates waiting for their food - it was embarassing to watch - a toaster and a huge pile of bread were stacked on a rickety table at the end of the queue and guests were expected to make their own toast - this resulted in people putting the toast in and walking back to their tables and forgetting about it - lovely aroma of burnt toast followed and as the toaster was right next to our table we werent very happy at all with that either - all in all they ruined what should have been a special night and we will never be back and would never recommend them to anyone else !!!

Nice hotel

by TripAdvisor Member fortune

The hotel is in a very convenient location - right in the centre!
My room + bathroom were spotless - could have done with more towels in the bathroom - saying that, I never asked for anymore but I'm sure if I had it would not have been a problem. All the staff at the hotel were very helpful + pleasant - they are a credit to the hotel. The breakfast was nice - cereals, pastries, hot buffet, fruit + yoghurt were available. The only worriyng thing was that one of the chefs did not know how to make an omelette!!! Nevertheless when the other chef made it, it was very tasty! The room service menu is good + the prices are not extortionate - I recommend the chicken caesar salad!
I would stay here again + would definitely recommend this hotel.

Poor Catering...

by TripAdvisor Member Silverlou

We were a Group of around 38 persons, and found the Catering was very poor, we had to keep requesting practically everything, especially at Breakfast, there was so much wrong, its just too much to relate it all. It appeared they were trying but it was complete caos for every one of our 7 days. Very dissapointed there is no lounge to relax in. One good point the Bedrooms are quite nice but just 3 Hangers for two people AND WHEN WE REQUESTED MORE WERE TOLD SORRY HAVENT GOT ANY. I am Very sorry but I cannot reccomend this hotel.
