Maryhill and Environs

by Maxus

Hello Glasgow,

Next week I’m attending a training course at the Stow College Campus on Hotspur Street, Maryhill.

Any advice on anything would be useful (things to do, things not to do, places to eat etc) and any info on hotels near the venue would be particularly welcome.

Regards

Mark

How much spare time will you have to go and do stuff? There is loads to do and see in Glasgow, but depends on what you're interested in and museums and art galleries etc are obviously open during the day only. Unfortunately I'm busy evey evening next week except Wednesday but if you want to meet up then let me know. Can't really help with hotels but I'll try to remember to ask in work tomorrow.

Sorry, I've not had a chance to ask about hotels and I'll only be in very briefly tomorrow. If you look on the visit scotland site (I think I have the link on my Glasgow page) you'll find information there. Hope you have a good trip in any case.

Apparently there's a Holiday Inn Express right opposite the college, but Stow College is very close to the city centre so if work are paying there are various hotels there like the Hilton or the Marriot.

A thousand pardons for ignoring your replies, I had a mad week and was off line until I got back from Glasgow, which was as wonderful as ever.

I took the advice of a colleague (and ignored just about every review on the internet) and stayed at the Central Hotel because I went by train and it is at the station.

I thought it was great (I got a staff rate) an interesting place and I would stay there again but then I’m weird.

Once again thanks for taking the time.

Travel Tips for Glasgow

Westend of Glasgow

by sleepflower2

The Westend of Glasgow is my favourite place in the world. It is the student part of town where all the best bars, restaurants, parks, museums and buildings are. It is beautiful during every season, but I think I prefer it during Autumn when I can walk down Kelvin Way with the leaves crunching under my feet. The scent of Autumn here is amazing, especially in Kelvingrove. I miss the friendly people, the warm welcome, the choice of activities, the fantastic art and architecture, the nightlife and above all, the familiarity of Glasgow.

George Square Bake shop.

by dabidc

I want to comment on the bakery shop at the south west corner of George Square, it is called Greggs, I have no photo.

The visit to the square was around 12.30pm, the shop was very very busy, I passed four times in about 20 minutes, as I walked aorund taking photos and going to the Information Centre.

The arrangement inside the bakery appeared to be two lines of people, two queues as they are called in Britain, one line was for lunch time items like sandwiches and a drink, that one went around the walls of the shop, where the prepared foods were loacetd. Then it moved to a cash till and the poeple left.

Another line seemed to be more on the inner section of the store and came to a counter by the window, where all other bakery goods were available, so you could buy some rolls to take home, then pay for them and leave the store.

However it was set up, seemed to work very well, many folks were in George Sq sitting having a sandwich lunch.

The Statue of Lobey and Rank astride Elfie, galloping down Woodlands Road (just up the street from the Cafe Insomnia). This is a Tribute to Bud Neill the Author of the Famous comic strip of the late 40's to the mid 50's. It is considered a classic comic strip.
