How to get to South Street

by Redang

Hi friends:

Next August I will go to Glasgow, and O'd like to ask you:
. How can I get from the International airport to South Street?
- How to get from the city centre to South Street?
- How to find accommodation nearby?, I mean, what is the name of the area?

Thanks.

Santi

South Street in the north west of the city runs from Partick to Scotstoun, it is the closest street to the River on the north bank. It is quite a long street and has large engineering works at it`s west end.
From the airport you could get a bus into the city centre and a bus out to South Street. There are a few other ways to go once you get to know your way.
From South Street all buses going east go to the city centre and you may be close to a train station too.
It depends what sort of accomodation you are looking for but there are flats for rent in areas around Partick and along Dumbarton Road.

Travel Tips for Glasgow

have a walk in the west end,...

by mishmash

have a walk in the west end, especially if the weather is nice (yes it happens !) go to the Botanic Garden, have a drink in ashton lane (behind Byres Road).
Go to the light house, it is a museum in an alley next to Buchanan Street, there you can find much of Mackintosh's work, if you want to see one of his masterpiece, go and have a look at the School of Art behind Sauchiall Street. The different Pubs !! just because there really is an effort about the decoration
ie : don't miss The Corinthian (Ingram street) and Arta (old cheese market - merchant city) those two are a MUST SEE.+ there you can meet with a bunch of scottish people, the grrrreatest people in Europe so far.

Lord Provost's procession

by bonio

If you're fortunate you may see this procession through the city centre! I'll guess it happens each year around the 2nd Saturday in June?...anyway bagpipes very evident if you enjoy them, me? I took refuge in a pub until they'd gone!

Sno-Zone

by hevbell

This place is an indoor real snow slope and nursery slope for skiiing and snowboarding [and also toboganning I believe..]. You can take lessons. If you are up to the standard of being able to control your speed & turns & use the tow then you can use the main slope which is about 200m long. There are some jumps and things for doing tricks or you can just go straight down like me! I'd only been to a dry ski slope locally and found quite a difference being on the snow but it was great fun and would definitely go back If you have your own equipement then bring it with you but the use of boots & skis/snowboard is included in the price. Ski trousers and jackets can be hired for £5. Although its quite cold i found having a long sleeve top on underneath quite warm once i got going up and down. Gloves are essential though, but if you forget you can buy them for £12

We paid £25 for 2 hours on a Thursday night which was Freestyle hour - bit advanced for me really! Normally its £21 for an hour but I think they do different deals depending on time of day, number of people etc so check out the website before you go

Gretna Green

by margaretvn

Gretna Green was our first stop on the way up to Kilmarnock to get to our house and we stopped there for lunch. Although the Blacksmiths shop is very much a tourist trap I think (you pay 80 pence to see the anvil where so many people have been married) it does have some charm. This is especially so when you arrive (as we did) just as a couple has been married there. You are of course not allowed into the blacksmiths shop during the ceremony but hearing the piper is lovely.
The bedroom was added later and is used as a setting for the wedding photos. Nearby is the new Gretna Green factory outlet complex for a bit of shopping if you want.

Summer nights!

by husain

Being rather far up north, summer nights in Scotland are usually very short.
Coming from tropical climes in India, its always a little odd to get used to daylight up until 10pm often. Even after that, the sky remains a deep shade of red sometimes. Quite a sight!
