Travel Tips for Oban

Gaelic Sign Posting

by scottishvisitor

Gaelic is still used in this part of Scotland. The English translation is "Tighan Truish" "The House of the Trousers" & "Puilladobhrain" "Anchorage" Scotland has a right of way policy which means you have the right to walk anywhere. This is controlled by the Scottish right of way & Access Society in Edinburgh.

DUNOLLIE CASTLE

by hevbell

Just north of Oban, following the road to Ganavan Sands, lie the ruins of this 12th century castle. Its on private property so access is not recommended. Its believed that there has been a fort on this location for centuries with earliest records in 686 when it was called "Dun Ollaigh".

VIEW FROM TOWER

by hevbell

The tower is a (steep!) 10 minute walk from the quay but is well worth it for the panoramic views, to be seen from the viewing platform, of Oban and the nearby islands.

Of course if you don't feel like making yourself that exhausted you can just drive up the hill and park your car in the car park just below the tower!! I'm too stupid for that though, both times I was there I had a car with me but climbed up the hill!

OBAN SEALIFE CENTRE & SEAL SANCTUARY

by hevbell

The Oban sealife centre & seal sanctuary is located a few miles north of Oban at Barcaldine on the road to Fort William (A828). It contains aquariums full of a huge variety of different kinds of sea creatures including small sharks which there was a talk about. They also have a seal nursery and outside pools for the resident seals

LOCH ETIVE

by hevbell

This photo doesn't really do Loch Etive justice and makes it look quite small. Unfortunately the day I stopped here it had been raining heavily on and off and the rain and clouds somewhat obliterated what looked like it would be a beautiful view up the Loch. I stopped at Taynuilt and drove right up to the end of the road. There are apparently cruises leave here in summer, twice daily, and criuse up the loch to give superb views of the moutainous area to the south of Glen Coe.
