Travel Tips for Oban

Dunstaffnage bay and castle

by shivan

Ladies and gentlemen, this was the scenery early in the morning just outside the window of my room.
The hotel is just outside Oban, in a place called Dunbeg, and it is called Wide Mouthed Frog.
It also has an astounding restaurant with fresh seafood.
It is a bit chilly at dinner time to eat outside, but the view of the Dunstaffnage castle and the bay was great

The hills and the lochs

by zizkov

This is a picture of Loch Awe taken descending from Ben Cruachan, around 25 miles drive east of Oban.
Ben Cruachan is a Munro (mountain over 3000 ft) and a popular hillwalking area. There is also a hydro-electric power station (with visitor centre) underneath it. Loch Awe is a large inland loch east and south-east of Oban. Most people will see it from the north shore, along the Pass of Brander, but the long arm of it stretches southwards, and is very off the beaten path.

NETHER LARGIE SOUTH CAIRN

by hevbell

There are 3 cairns in the Nether Largie area - this south one, the mid one and the north. They are within walking distance of each other but I just visited the south cairn [nearest to the car park] because I was a little pushed for time. These three cairns are in a linear form along with another cairn, Ri Cruin, a little to the south. This is believed to be in some way significant.

The south cairn is believed to be around 5000 years old and is a large chambered tomb with a stone slab roof.
Entry to the site is free and there are boards that give a small explanation of the history.

There is another cairn and further standing stones even further south, at Dunchraigaig. there are more photos from this area on my Scotland page]

Take a walk on the waterfront

by bicycle_girl

Walking will give you the opportunity to use you senses and observe what is going on much better than in a car, a bus or a train, plus it gives you the advantage of having some exercice to digest your supper!!!

Walking in the lonely Glen

by scottishvisitor

On the 13th. February 1692 on a snowy night the glen rang with fear as the Campbell troops slaughtered the House Of MacDonald. They arrived in the early afternoon & were offered food & shelter. When everyone was asleep they murdered 36 men scattering the rest of the clan who fled in fear into the glen's inhospitable weather. All this was meant to prove the long arm of the law but breached ancient laws on hospitality. This is why The Massacre of Glenco became so well known & provided the Jacobites with much more support. The glen has a quiet romantic feel but always seems strangely quiet as if time has stood still
