Travel Tips for Oban

No smoking

by antz

Law has been passed in Scotland now which makes smoking in public places (ie bars and restaurants) illegal. For this reason, you will huddles of people standing around the entrances to bars having a quick cigarette. I am not sure about some of the other bars, but I do know that the Lorne has a beer garden which is covered overhead and heated, in which you can smoke. However, I wouldn't like to be out there when the midges start!

Rare Breeds Farm

by Krumel

Near Oban is a rare-breeds farm you absolutely have to see if you like animals. Just rustle a bit with your brown paper bag of food that you bought in the shop, and you'll have hundreds of new best friends. The sheep are hilarious and will follow you around like dogs. There's also cattle there, donkeys and llamas.

Have a look at my travelogue to meet the funniest sheep ever.

KILMARTIN VILLAGE

by hevbell

The village of Kilmartin itself has some interesting features. Kilmartin church is known for its carved medieval Christian crosses and gravestones and what may be the earliest carved figure of Christ in the UK.

The village is also home to the Museum of Ancient Culture. Unfortunately I didn't have time to go there but I'm sure it would have given me a much better understanding of the significance and history of the various cairns and standing stones in the local area. There is also a good view over the valley to the south where you can see one or two of the cairns in the distance.

Isle of Mull

by ghweeh

A hop over to Isle of Iona passing lovely shorelines to arrive in Craignure on the Isle of Mull. Then, we took a coach from Craignure to Fionnphort pier. Along the way, we enjoyed beautiful views like majestic mountains, villages with picturesque cottages, green land everywhere….

Bonawe Iron Furnace

by stevezero

Bonawe Iron Furnace, a relic from an industrial past that produced anything up to 700 tons of iron per year from 1753 to 1876, Strange to find an industrial site seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The answer revolves around the problem of transporting the fuel. Until the widespread use of coke in the late 1700s, iron furnaces depended for fuel on charcoal. And the large scale production of charcoal needed an awful lot of trees. Still worse, transporting the charcoal was a hugely wasteful business.
The approach adopted by the English iron masters who ran the business was to take the iron to the source of the fuel, the iron ore actually coming to this site from Cumbria.
There are still quite a lot of the original buidings to be seen and the site is set in a picturesque setting by Loch Etive.
