More about Oban Bay Hotel & Spa
DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT YOU READ!!
Myself and my partner are just back from a 2 night stay at the oban bay hotel. to say i was apprehensive is an understatement due to the terrible reviews i read on this site.
we booked a junior suite on dinner bed and breakfast and had an excellent stay, the room was lovely and clean and the food was great.
Lovely hotel but sometimes a little too relaxed in the service
We booked this hotel through a discount travel operator for a very reasonable price so we were not sure what our room would be like. We were very pleasantly surprised with a good size, bright, airy room. The beds were comfortable and the room and bathroom were clean. The only down side to the room was the amount of noise which seeped into it from the corridor and woke me up at various intervals on both nights of our stay.
The hotel's spa facilities were very relaxing and the views from the hot tub over the bay were wonderful. We had booked various masages and facials in the hotels treatment room and they were excellent and I would recommend them for anyone. The hotel also has a conservatory at the front which overlooks the bay and has stunning views.
The staff in the hotel were all very pleasant but nothing is done at any great pace so if you are planning a hectic break this is probably not the hotel for you. Our booking included breakfast and dinner on both days and as mentioned by various reviewers the service at both was haphazard and even chaotic at times. No one in the dining room seemed to have a dedicated task or dedicated tables and thus all the staff ran around just trying to notice which guests needed what - and as a result we saw several people, over the two days, waiting exceptionally long times for their food, although this did not happen to us personally.
We had a very enjoyable stay in the Oban Bay Hotel and I would stay there again for a relaxing spa break. Overall I would say it was an average hotel but if they sorted out the management of the dining room and sound proofed the rooms a little better this could be a great hotel.
Booked 2 nights, left after the first with a very bad back pain.
My partner and I have just come back from a VERY DISAPPOINTING SHORTENED weekend at the Oban Bay Hotel. They have limited parking, but we had been informed in advance; the corridors are an uncomfortable labyrinth if you have got luggage; the room we were given was small, dark and dirty (the bath!!!), we were given another one, with shower only (still dirty!), and the morning after I woke up with a very bad back pain because of the cheap spring matress! I asked to book a massage to solve the problem, but the facility was fully booked. We tried the Spa... the warm shower was broken, the steam room was badly timed (either far too hot or with no steam at all), the water in the hot tub did not look very clean, so we passed on that! At 10am we decided we did not want to spend the second night in the hotel... all but a relaxing gateaway from Aberdeen! The receptionist said we bought a non-refundable special offer package, which is not true, as we booked for two nights, not for a weekend package. She firts asked that we pay the whole amount, she then offered a 75% discount on the second night, and finally only made us pay for the first night (135 per night BB+spa)! After checking out, before heading back to Aberdeen, we spent a little while in their porch with a nice sea view.. the only pleasant part of our stay in Oban.
Once Was enough !!
The problems began an arrival; we had not booked one of the few parking spaces, so had to drop off the luggage with one of us to watch over it , while the other drove along the promenade to the first available parking space; about 600 yards away .. a nice walk along the seafront but...! (had to repeat this procedure in the morning of course !! ).
We were not pleased to have been allocated a room on what seemed to be one of the main corridors on the ground floor; the room was although superficially neat, quite dusty and shabby around the edges (see pictures). There was also no soap in the room, maybe the cleaner had been in too much of a hurry to rememeber it !
The worst thing by far was the noise from the corridor outside the room .. we eventually got off to sleep after midnight only to be woken at 0230 by loud conversation and again by loud corridor noise just after 0300. Also again by a delivery truck at about 7 am ish outside in the back car park.
The breakfast was odd.. many guests but no buffet; all food including cereals and even juice bought to each person individually.. seemed a very odd way to organise things.
We would certaqinly never stay there again, and hope one of the national chains opens in Oban soon !!!
great value for money
booked this through a website hotel booking company and got a great dinner, bed and breakfast deal of £85 each. food was amazing and the service was great aswell. when we booked we asked if we could get a room with a seaview but thought that with the deal we got we would have no chance but was chuffed to find out when we got to our room we had a beautiful room with great views looking over to the morvern hills and the bay, so top marks. also room looked as if it had just been refurbished. we also had access to the spa which we never knew about when we booked but we never used the facilities
10/10 great hotel, great views, great food and only a 5 minute walk along the promenade to the town centre
could do better
We have just returned from a weekend stay at this hotel. All in all, it was pleasant but could have been sooooo much better! No parking (tiny car park, full when we arrived despite trying to book a space
- unconfirmed - in advance), although plenty of parking in the area.
Hotel staff competent but distant, and the hotel itself is adequately
clean. It is however in dire need of a makeover - very tired and shabby round the edges, chipped paintwork, etc etc. Breakfast as noted by other reviewers is very odd (no marmalade!!! "we've run out") and even french toast is charged at a premium rate despite foregoing the included cooked breakfast! We were VERY disappointed to be unable to book any treatments - these were fully booked on our arrival and were part of the reason we opted for this hotel, we should have been advised on the website to book these in advance. The
spa is pleasant but facilities are minimal - hot tub, sauna and steam
room only (we had paid extra for a "spa break" and so were a bit disappointed). We witnessed a VERY strange incident in the bar between another guest and a rather rude and incompetent barmaid, which hardly inspired confidence. Did I enjoy my stay? Yes,
certainly. Would we go back ...... hmmm, don't think so - after all, Oban has plenty of hotels to choose from, the Oban Bay is not
"cheap", and I'd like to think we could do better next time.
Buy Ear Plugs
Stayed at the Oban bay for a Wedding. Please note, reserve your parking, had to park down the road! Nice walk back in the rain! Room was ok, but cleaning staff had radio blasting away in the morning so if your having a lay in - forget it. Staff were friendly, but not orgainised, due to the fact that we saw the same very few people doing everything - Hotel certainly get's their moneys worth out of work of these people. Nice view from the hotel, and Oban town is ok, small but everything is there. OK hotel, but wouldn't stay there again.
Mass market hotel
The hotel obviously caters to the coach tour trade, business travelers beware this hotel is not really suited for you!
Horrible small brown room with a really tiny shower. Not much parking
at the hotel I had to park on the sea front about a 4 min walk away a
bit of a pain to walk to in the morning with my luggage, my laptop bag and my hand bag.
Breakfast was very average the scrambled eggs were very watery but they did offer a veggie sausage which is first for me, the staff were also very rushed.
Reception staff very freindly and helpful though
Everything except a SPA Hotel
We organised our own trip through Scotland with the help of a travel agent. One of the highlights had to be Oban and partly because of the SPA hotel we booked since I like to go to these type of wellness facilites. But the Spa is divided in two parts so you can not use it at the same time without crossing a public corridor. When we arrived only the sauna was hot (very hot at 110 degrees) and the cold shower. The warm shower was out of order the whole three days. The steamroom was repaired the third day but the intervals of adding steam are much to long so when there is steam coming, you are blown and burned out of that room. Also the hottub was only at the last night back in service. Installing it with a sea view is nice but that is also the only nice part of it. A small relax room is part of it and any drinking is prohibited.
My conclusion is that none of the staff knowes how to run a hotel (we experienced the same problems with parking, the served breakfast, a noisy weddingparty on saturday etc) and they really do not know how to deal with Spa equipment. The hotel chain has made a nice marketing plan to throw in some cheap equipment so they are able to include SPA in there name but they forget to run the business. If they continue like this they will not stay long in Oban because no client will come back anymore. Avoid this place because we experienced in Scotland more then enough well run hotels.
My wife and I stayed at this Hotel again on the 4th to 6th January (second time within a year) and found the comments that were aimed at this Hotel bang out of order. When one considers what you pay for a two night break complete with food you really get more than you pay for in this Hotel. Ok it is a little flawed around the edges, but the rooms were once again spotless and warm, the meals when we sampled them were very good. When you throw in the cracker of a view from the conservatory at the front, what more could one wish for, for the money. If you want to find problems with any Hotel, you can find them, and this hotel would be no different! All in all a very good deal and if you can find a Hotel that offers a better deal than this, then please let me know. By the way we are independant travellers of many a week end break with no ties to this particular hotel or its owners, just that we do not want to see a hotel being painted with the wrong brush!!
