OBAN YOUTH HOSTEL

This is the SYHA hostel in Oban. Its right on the esplanade with fantastic views over the harbour and islands. There are good self catering kitchen facilities with dining area and internet access. Its about a 5-10 minute walk from the centre of town. Breakfast is no longer included although you can order a pre-packed breafast from reception.

group dining on a budget

by rcburli

I'll be in Oban in July with a group of 15 (teenagers and adults).
We have $25 US dollars/per person for lunch and dinner.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, and just because the group includes teenagers we would like seafood options, etc.

That about £12.50 for two meals. You could have fish and chips for lunch, and then have about £9 or so for the evening meal. Not a great deal and I think you will be limited to fast food/chain meals, as opposed to a proper restaurant.

Please let me know if you managed this? And if so, how you did it?

Travel Tips for Oban

Views from the Sound of Mull

by CdnJane

One of my favourite views as I'm on the ferry out of Oban to or from the Isle of Mull is this view along the Sound of Mull. The clouds indicated rain... and we got drenched, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the view.

Kayaking

by scottishvisitor

Seafreedom Kayaks offer courses to beginners and more experienced kayakers. The tuition is offered in small groups and is available from May until October. You can sail the open sea or various lochs around the Argyll area.
Please note this tip is already starred because I changed the sport. No equipment is necessary as all can be hired from the company. You may want to bring your own wet suit but these are also available in various sizes.

Ben Nevis

by keeweechic

Ben Nevis stands at 1344 metres and overlooks Fort William. It is the highest mountain in Britain and is now owned by the John Muir Trust. Nevis comes from the Gaelic work for heavy or clouds. The top is covered in snow for most of the winter and spring and the summit is shrouded by clouds for about 300 days of the year.

Watch a sunset

by bicycle_girl

My free activity by excellence! Sunsets make you slow down and realize how precious life is. For some reason I notice the sunsets much more when I travel than when I am home... This one was totally mesmerizing!!!

Iona Abbey

by ghweeh

One of Scotland’s most historic and sacred sites founded by St Columba and his Irish followers in AD 563. After having enjoyed over 200 years of tranquility, Iona was raided by Norsemen and all the religious buildings were later broken up. The abbey and monastic buildings were restored in 1938. In the burial ground, lies the remains of over 60 Scottish, Irish and Norse Kings.
