We plan to spend a few days around Oban and take the ferry to the isles but are not able to book ahead, are there any spots around Oban where we can park a motorhome for the night without treding on anyone's toes. Two adults in completely self suficient vehicle. we are happy to have our evening meal in a restaurant or hotel in exchange for staying in the car park.
Have a look at http://www.obancaravanpark.com/

Billy
I have spent about 150 nights in my motorhome in lots of different places all over Scotland and never had problems of been chased áway etc. Once I woke up and there was a lot of road-construction going on around of my car, BUT nobody of the workers did chase me away or wake me up...
I am sure you will find lots of places without a sign telling you "No Camping/no overnight parking"
Something that I never did is :
Eating ouside of my car and placing chair & table in front of the car
and of course I always obeyed the trafic-rules and the signs.

You will definitely want something to protect you from the fierce Scottish Midgie if you are here from May through to September, and I would suggest "Avon" (brand name) "Skin So Soft" oil to slap on as it really works. Midgies can make your life a misery if you are outdoors in the calm, so come prepared!
You can buy it in local shops, but it is twice the price compared to buying it on-line direct from Avon! And you get super soft skin too!!
This picture was taken on the electricity board access road to Cruachan Dam. I presume the sheep normally build up speed on the long downhill stretch, though why the limit is 24 mph is puzzling. Possibly this is the speed at which sheep go out of control, losing their footing and rolling unstoppably downwards in a blur of wool and baaing.
As if that wasn't hazard enough, watch out also for the falling rocks. I suppose they may be dislodged by the hammering of hooves as a herd of ovines thunders past.
On a fair evening , it is definitely worth taking an hour or so just to walk along the Esplanade and watch the world go by.
There are some beautiful sunsets from Oban Bay looking out over Kererra, and down the sound of Mull. As the sun goes down and turns the sky pink and orange, you will see gulls bathing, and swans swimming, and sometimes even little turnstones flipping pebbles. The slow pace of the wildlife, combined with the fresh sea air leaves you with a feeling of tranquility.
Last island of the day via ferry from Fionnphort at the south of Mull to Isle of Iona. It was separated from Mull by about a mile of water. More thatched cottages overlooking the shores. It was said that Columba set foot in this island at Port a’Churaich, in AD 563, with his followers from Ireland. We have a good weather, with warm sunshine as we strolled along some of the most beautiful coast, ruins, very green grasslands….

Q: Oban Ferry Terminal - long wait, what to do? "Does the ferry terminal have a place to store bags? Is there anything to do within a very short walk from the terminal area -..."
A: "Short answer is, I shouldn't imagine that there is a left luggage place at the ferry terminal. You could always email www.ports.or.g.uk and ask, or phone 01631 566688..."
