Travel Tips for Oban

A Change in Time

by scottishvisitor

Years ago you couldn't cross to Ballachuilsh without the small ferries. Now they have build a road bridge with a footpath & gone is the romance of the Corries song about the River Gambler on the Ballachuilsh Ferry

RARE BREEDS FARM PARK

by hevbell

This is a 30 acre farm park situated a couple of miles outside of Oban up in the hills. They have all kinds of animals there including deer, sheep, goats etc most of which are rare breeds and very cute! There is a pet corner where kids (and adults alike!) can feed and pet the tamer animals.

Its a previous winner of the Scottish tourist boards "Tourism Oscar"

Eilean Donan Castle

by keeweechic

Eilean Donan Castle sits dramatically on an island at the meeting point of Lochs Duich, Long and Alsh. You can see it for miles as you approach the area and it features in many articles on Scotland.

The castle was built in 1220 by Alexander II and was bombarded by the English warship the 'Worcester' in the 18th century. In 1932 the MacRae family reconstructed the ruin and today the castle houses a museum and clan memorial.

Dunstaffnage Castle

by stevezero

Once the of the original Kingdom of the Scots, it was to here that The Stone of Destiny was brought over from Ireland via Iona. In the mid-ninth century with the Norsemen attacking from the west, the seat of power was moved to Scone, near Perth. The Stone was used at the coronations of subsequent Scottish kings until it was taken by Edward I to Westminster Abbey in 1296. The Stone was returned to Scotland on Saint Andrews' Day, 30 November 1996 and can now be seen in Edinburgh Castle.
Dunstaffnage Castle looks square and impenetrable with round towers. A MacDougall stronghold until 1309, it was seized by Robert the Bruce who then appointed the Campbell clan as its hereditary keepers in the name of the Crown.
Bonne Prince Charlie's heroine, Flora MacDonald, was held prisoner here for a short time in 1746.

If you are innocent visit the jail

by scottishvisitor

Inverary Jail provides a lot of information on Scotland's criminal past. If you stole some bread you were imprisoned for 30 days. If you stole a sheep you were sent to Australia - I would presume you got to take the sheep with you (ewe)
