Travel Tips for Perth
Dunkeld - North Perth - Historic & Beautiful

The cathedral in Dunkeld was the centre of religion in Scotland, and so the political power base.
It was from here that King Duncan's followers avenged his death at the hands of Macbeth (Karl Hundason?), famously by 'marching' upon Dunsinane Hill Fort with Oaks from Birnham Wood (see Shakespeare for the fictional version of events!) Perth is very much the coutryside around the centre, so is generally referred to as "Perthshire".
Use Perth as a base, and focal point, but it is the surrounding places (within 30 miles) that is of real significance and importance to a Scottish Tour.

Across the River - Rodney Gardens and Sculptures

When in Perth, make sure you cross over the River Tay and walk through the Gardens there - good place for a picnic - and enjoy the sculptures.
There are 3 bridges and its best to walk over the southern (railway) bridge's adjacent footbridge - accessed from beside the "Ferguson Gallery" by the South Inch - and walk north with the River on your left hand side until the 3rd bridge.
Elcho Castle - Near Perth - Historic Scotland

A real castle, fun and fascinating, small and little known but very enjoyable - in a beautiful setting - all the more special for NOT having coach parties and masses of tourists. This one is for connoissseurs!
My picture shows the Doocot outside the castle - by the beautiful, tranquil farm pond.
Elcho was designed as both as a stronghold and a private residence.The basic design is a 16th century Z-plan tower house, consisting of a long rectangular main block, with a square stair tower projecting from one corner and three other towers projecting on the opposite side.
The site of this castle is thought to have been in use since the 13th century, when William Wallace is supposed to have resided here, but nothing of his earthen castle remains.
The current building was most likely built by Sir John Wemyss, who died in 1572.
The castle was placed into State care in 1929 and is cared for by Historic Scotland.

Perth, it's a place we have passed many times on our journeys to northern Scotland.
Finally we get to see some of the beauty of the area surrounding the town.
The town itself we are leaving for our next trip north of the border when hopefully we shall be satying there for a while.
