Excellent boutique hotel
We spent a very enjoyable stay at this small, stylish hotel, a former 18th century coaching inn, run by a young, highly professional and enthusiastic team.
Rooms and beds are very comfortable and tastefully decorated (trendy colours: grey, purple, taupe, antique red, with silver-coloured furnishings and spacious retro bathrooms. The 16 rooms all have flat-screen TV, CD/DVD player and I-pod dock.
The restaurant food is exceptionally good: creative and skillful cooking at very reasonable prices: marvellous 'slow' food, like the wonderful, tender lamb, full of flavour and stewed in a rich, dark sauce. Starter: scallops with pea puree and mackerel sauce - a perfectly delicious combination. Dessert: citrus tart with a kir sorbet. The restaurant was packed out when we dined there.
Excellent breakfasts too: we chose the smoked haddock poached in milk with poached eggs as a main course. There was also a good choice of alternative dishes, including eggs benedict, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon or full English breakfast with local farm sausages.
