A cheap souvenir ? Oldest newspaper in the world ?
Established in 1695, the Rutland and Stamford Mercury is the oldest newspaper in Britain, and possibly the world still to be production.
The only other serious contender is the wonderfully named "Berrow's Worcester Journal". Although that first appeared in 1690, it was very irregular in it's production for 30 years or so, and therefore the Mercury claims the prize.
Despite the name it was almost a national paper as Stamford was on the main road between London and York - making distribution possible.
Three editions (Stamford and the Deepings, Rutland and Bourne) are published every Friday. With circulation figures of about 22,000.
