Ancient coaching inn to behold..

It would be very difficult to find a hotel in England with any more history.

There has been an 'inn' or hotel in some form on this site for about a thousand years.

In it's heyday it was one of the premier coaching inns on the main great North Road from London to York, a journey of about four days. You can still see some signage in the hotel refereeing to it, and the present public areas were once waiting rooms for the 'up' coaches to London and the 'down' coaches to York. On a good run you would have made it to London in about 10 hours.

In the modern era the George had built on all this wonderful tradition and is a fine four star hotel. The staff seem to love the place and unlike most hotels does not rely on pimply youths who know nothing. Chambermaids are however standard East European Issue.

Expect plenty of quirky architectural features in the bedrooms, and a plumbing system which gurgles and cranks itself into life. It works, but it is triumph of British ingenuity and willpower over the odds.

It's the sort of place that you would expect to see 'old Ned' on a retainer come in and polish the cobblestones in the courtyard each week.

Unique Quality: Pay that little bit more and go for the four-poster bed...go on, you deserve it.
