My sister is attending a concert at hte O2 in june.
They'll be staying at the Ramada Inn Docklands. Does anyone have a tip on where to eat in that area ?

Thanks in advance !

I'd recommend eating at the venue - there are some great bars and restaurants at the O2.

Might be worth booking in advance.

If you fancy something a bit more individual and far cheaper than the corporate bars and restaurants near the O2, you might care to come over to "Barking Town". It's about a 15 minute drive away. Type "Barking Town", not just "Barking" into yout VT destinations search box and you will find tons of tips and photos of the area.

If you are not driving, then I can recommend several cheap restaurants within 5 minutes of Barking Station.

Of the ones mentioned in the many restaurant tips, my absolute favourite is the Farhana Indian Restaurant and Take Away.

http://www.farhanatakeaway.co.uk .

Great food at unbelievably low prices. Forouk who runs the place is also one of the nicest people you could wish to meet. He is starting to get used to visitors from Virtual Tourist too .... We were in there the other day and an entire Danish family showed up and I have also just spotted another glowing review from some people from Sussex.

Bring your camera too if you come, the restaurant is on a roundabout with a stunning piece of modern street art called "the Catch" - 2 enormous steel fishing nets, brimming with fish, lit in an icy blue-green light. You can see the fish wriggle as the net is blown by the wind. So get a table by the window.

No need to book, just show up. They are open from 5.30pm to 11.30pm, 7 days but have only recently started opening for lunch. So call first if you are coming during the day. Say "hi" to Forouk from Mike.

Enjoy the concert.

As Mike says, Barking is a good choice. If you want to go the other way i.e. towards the centre, there are plenty of good options round Mile End, Whitechapel, Aldgate etc., all close to where you are staying. Have a look at my pages for suggestions.

Hope this assists,

fergy.

Platform 9 3/4

by joits

On my way to Edinburgh, Scotland via Kings Cross I made a point to go and find the 9 3/4 platform so famously portrayed in the Harry Potter movies and books. I wasn't really expecting a whole platform, it turned out to just be a wall with a sign of the numbers 9 3/4, but as a Harry Potter fan, I still thought it was pretty cool.

More Notting Hill Carnival!!

by Mariajoy

The carnival celebrates the abolition of slavery - it's a complete mix of races/ethnicities/colours and a huge cultural celebration for everyone! Bank Holiday Monday is called "Adults Day" and as such it probably is better to bring young children on the Saturday or Sunday - but I did see a few children around on the Monday too.

There are all kinds of West Indian/Jamaican/Caribbean/African food being cooked on the street - and apart from the carnival itself there is also plenty of spontaneous dancing/music/bands/sound systems everywhere.

There are plenty of porta-loos on the streets (but some local residents open their homes for this purpose at a cost of £1-2 as they know there is great need (and a lot of money to be made!!!) - Another reason not to wear flip flops is that as the day wears on some people don't bother with loos at all and just find a grubby street corner somewhere - so watch where you walk!

With two million visitors all packed into one small(ish) area of London - things can get a little crowded - it would be very difficult for anyone with mobility problems to get around - but not entirely impossible... consider your route carefully - there are specially designated "quiet streets" where you can take a breather from the festivities if necessary! (make sure you find a map showing the route the carnival takes - the quiet streets are highlighted!).
