Great location in Llangollen.

I stayed at The Hand in Llangollen while in Wales on a golfing week-end. The hotel is a 400 year old coaching inn and steeped in history. Our room was compact but more than adequate as a place to crash out at night after a days golf and a night's drinking. We were lucky enough to have a room on the top floor with a great view overlooking the river Dee. Some parts of the hotel are looking a little down at heal and probably due for a refurb but that almost adds to the character of the place.

Unique Quality: We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening but breakfast was a help yourself buffet with enough choices to please most people. Staff were friendly enough and the bar did an excellent pint of best mild, if that's your cup of tea.

I have seen lots of negative comments about this hotel so was expecting a bad experience but to be honest it was fine. Not the Ritz but heh it's 400 years old.

The Storied Hand Hotel

I stayed in the Hand Hotel during the summer of 2005. It was with a group of students and we all enjoyed it very much. It was nice to be out in the country in Llangollen and the Hotel was small enough that we were given plenty of attention.

Perfect location to
--walk around downtown
--walk up the hill and see the castle remains.
--go behind the hotel and sit by the river

Look for the three-legged dog. I hear he has been there forever...twice.

Unique Quality: The bar/pub and dinner rooms were quite relaxing. The dinner room had plenty of room for everyone, even though the food was off and on from night to night. The bar and commons areas were perfect for the evening. If you ever want to stay in for a night, this place is great to have beer, sit back, and relax.

Filled with character, ghosts, laughter, history!

This 400-year-old hotel is a pleasant home-away-from-home. We've stayed at the Hand Hotel twice in the month of June--once in 2001 and once in 2006--on student trips organized through EF Tours. Both times this was a favorite hotel among both students and adults.

Unique Quality: It's clean, character-filled, and historic. Its brochure states, "Once an important coaching inn, this popular hotel now combines its old world charm with modern amenities. When you stay at The Hand you could find yourself in a room once occupied by: Charles Darwin, William Wordsworth, Robert Browning, Winston Churchill MP, David Lloyd George MP, Duke of Wellington, Sir Walter Scott, Bernard Shaw, Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn, Ella Fiztgerald." In the hotel bar, there was a sing-along each evening we were there. One night, a choir joined in the event.

A lovely 'black and white' house with lovely garden - its a small Elizabethan manor with black and white wooden decoration around it - its lovely wooden interior is off limits to flash photography but you can buy postcards and souvenir book with photos in it from the guardian inside. It was owned and lived in by two single women - they lived together for many years since one ran away from her family in Ireland who were going to make her marry someone she didnt want to marry - so the couple did amazingly well, both able to support themselves financially to live idnependently and away from the society restraints of the time. They were very close, many try to say they were early lesbians but its written that those that knew them knew them to be very close friends as sisters - but regardless they had many friends and visitors of a notable circle for example the Duke of Wellington often came to visit.
They were buried together in the churchyard behind the Hand Hotel.
