Tintern Abbey
by jlaplante
My husband and I want to visit Tintern Abbey during our trip to England. We will be travelling by train and bus. We'd like to travel from Stratford to Chepstow and then on to Tintern Abbey. We'd like to stay overnight and see some of the area attractions while we're in Wales. Can anyone recommend a two-day itinerary. I am not very familiar with Wales, so I'm not sure where we should stay what we should see, etc. Any advice will be appreciated.

This site will help you with where to stay/what to do around Chepstow:
http://www.visitwyevalley.com/tic/chepstow.html
I suggest you base yourself there, as the bus to Tintern passes through (two-hourly) and it has a station. An alternative base might be Monmouth (bus goes from there too): http://www.monmouth.org.uk/index.php
http://www.southwalesattractions.co.uk/attractions/tintern-abbey.aspx has info on the Abbey (you'll need bus 69).
Lots to see in and around both places though most of your 'whole' day will be spent getting to/from and exploring the abbey and its surroundings, I suspect. Make sure you've got suitable clothes (layers/waterproofs/good walking shoes etc) and enjoy!

Travel Tips for Chepstow
Art on the Railings
by aaaarrgh
During the Summer months Chepstow has open-air art exhibitions, called Art on the Railings. They take place on the first Saturday of the month, May till October, in Beaufort Square. In July, August and September the display also fills the leafy lane next to St Mary's Church. Plenty of pointy cast-iron railings here and, when I visited, most of the exhibitors were sheltering from the wind and rain here!!
Quality ranged from excellent to dubious, professional artists to 'Sunday' painters, prices less than £20 to over £700.
A Day At TheRaces
by DUNK67
Chepstow Racecourse is a small undulating picturesque course. Because of the nature of the course viewing can be difficult at times. Plenty of money if you are a serious gambler but it isn`t necessary as you can have a good time with just a few small bets. A pair of binoculars would be a good idea to watch the horses when they are on the far side of the course.

The road between Usk and Abergavenny is a lovely country road to drive.Lots of places to stop, ideal for photographs and picnics. This was next to a bridge between both towns, just park up,and there it is,smans frequent the area to,lovely and peaceful.
How many steps !!

Just before Tintern Abbey (about 2miles)on your right theres a picnic area thats idyllic, really peaceful, lots of picnic tables, not many bins so take a bag for your rubbish.
You can get some smashing photos from there, unfortunatels the weather wasnt so good when I took this photo.
