Travel Tips for Caernarfon

Caernarfon promenade and harbour

by munki

After visiting the castle, you could go for a stroll along the promenade following the old town walls up to the mouth of the river Seiont.
If you like fishing there are several fishing trips available from the harbour.
If you have time to kill you could visit the Maritime Museum at Victoria Dock.

Look out for the Ghost at the Black Boy Inn.

by Myfanwe

The Black Boy Inn is a fantastic looking pub which dates back to 1522. It has wooden panelling, low ceilings and thick wooden support beams which generate a cosy 'Olde world' atmosphere. Years ago, during the thriving fishing industry it was a favourite watering hole for the seafarers. Nowadays it attracts tourists and locals alike.

If you visit the Black Boy Inn, make sure you keep an eye out for the resident Ghost - a Nun who may be seen running through the Inn to the Nunnery which was onc e at the rear of the Inn.

Caernarfon medieval town walls

by munki

The old market town, which is clearly surrounded by the town walls, it is easily explored on foot.
The impressive medieval fortress and town walls were built as part of the iron ring of castles to secure his English foothold in Wales after the death of the last Prince of Wales.

Caernarfon Castle: Arrowloops

by kelnsha

One of the most interesting features in the castle is the multiple groupings of arrowloops at two levels in the curtain wall on either side of the Granary Tower. These represent a refinement of the arrangements noted in the upper floors of the King's Gate. The firepower, which these loops enabled to be brought to bear on a limited front, must - by medieval standards - have been devastating.

Arrowloops are familiar defensive feature of medieval fortifications, allowing the maximum field of fire through the minimum external opening. At Caernarfon they reached the peak of deadly ingenuity.

Here the embrasures are contrived to allow up to three crossbowmen to discharge their bolts through a single external loop, thus enabling a fast and deadly crossfire to be laid down - in effect a kind of medieval machine-gun. The arrangement demanded considerable skill and discipline from the bowmen, who formed the mainstay of the castle's defence.

Caernarfon: The Heart of North Wales

by Tom_Fields

"One of Wales' Best Towns"

Caernarfon is one of the best places to go in Wales. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, situated on the Menai Strait, with one of the country's finest castles, it's a very special place. And, due to its location, it's unspoiled and not overrun with visitors. This is the real Wales.
