Glyn y Afon B&B: Economic B&B

Finding somwhere in Llanberis, or anywhere in Snowdonia, during the weekend of the Snowdon Run is a difficult task, and this place was chosen because it was fairly econimcally priced at around 55 per night for a double room at high season and actually had vacancies when we were searching.

The owners, Sue and Barry, are an English couple who took over maybe a year or so ago. From the looks of it they've spent a lot of time and money bringing the place up to speed as a good quality B&B. Comparatively, I'd say this place is a good choice given the number of more expensive establishments in the area.

Understandably, they get a lot of mountain climbers, and have a warm room for you to dry your damp climbing boots/umbrellas etc. Rooms have a small tv and en-suite bathroom. The B&B is located right in the heart of Llanberis, and while the high street doesn't get terribly busy, a room at the back of the house might be preferred. There's some limited parking at the back but you can usually find a place to park for the night on Stryd Fawr/the High Street.

Unique Quality: Breakfast is included in the price, served from 7.45 to 9.00. Unfortunately this is something that lets Glyn y Afon down a little, as I've had much better quality breakfasts in other B&Bs that were cheaper. While there's a good selection of cereals and you can also have a cooked breakfast, you get the feeling that they might be scrimping a little on quality sausages for example.

The best quality of this place is the friendliness of the owners. We were made to feel very welcome and were happy to listen to me chatting away about various inanities. The rooms are of a high quality, though on the small side. The beds are comfortable and the en-suites, though small, are modern and have a good sized shower.

There are also two lovely dogs here - their proud owners will be only too happy to show you the rosettes one of the dogs has won in show.

Booking in advance recommended.

Snowdon Ranger: Hostelling

Nice little hostel on the other side of Snowdon from Llanberis itself. It's right by one of the main tracks up to the summit.

Unique Quality: Quiet.

Tregarth Campsite: Tregarth

This campsite was centrally located for trips to Snowdon, Bangor etc. Hot showers at the farmhouse. Nice location. Right next to a waterfall, bit noisy at night though. We accidentally left our tent window open one night and woke up to our very own indoor swimming pool the following morning....cool.

Unique Quality: Unique qualities. Hmm. The woodlouse in the shower cubicle were unique.
