We are planning to stay in Brecon for 3-4 days in September and I was looking for suggestions of any 'free stuff' to do in the area. We will have a hire car and are quite keen to do some walking and love wildlife and country areas. We are travelling from Australia.
You won't be short of walking and wildlife possibilities around Brecon! The Brecon Beacons area is a national park of great beauty, imo.
Keep your fingers crossed for decent weather (but make sure you have suitable rainwear with you), get a local Ordnance Survey map when you arrive and just spend your days exploring this beautiful area. The OS map will show prehistoric (and historic) points of interest (many of which will be free) as well as footpaths/contours/villages etc etc.

If you plan high/wild walking check the weather forecast, make sure you let someone know where you plan to go and when you expect to be back, take proper equipment (food, compass, map, proper footwear/clothing). UK mountain areas may not be particularly high, but they are very treacherous because the weather can change very quickly; the volunteer mountain rescue teams are called out far too often because people venture where/when they should not.
Enjoy your explorations!
Don't forgetthe world heritage site at Blaenavon, with Big Pit minming museum, The World Heritage Centre and the Ironworks, all free admission.
The Big Pit really is excellent:I visited not long after it first opened and was hugely impressed.

Not free but at a reasonable price the Brecon Mountain Railway is an old fashioned steam train ride through the area. The website has details - http://www.breconmountainrailway.co.uk/
Thanks for all the fabulous suggestions everyone! I think we will need more than 3-4 days.
You'll be spoilt for choice.....just keep your fingers crossed for reasonable (i.e. dry) weather!
We have visited Wales last October, where we stayed for a week in a cottage in Llanwrda (30 min away from Brecons). It was really nice.
We ve visited Brecon Powys , the Brecon Mountain Railway (but we had to pay and I think not so worth it), Langrose Lake and Abergaveny (check for the food festival which I think takes place in September).
We rented a car and we did all the mentioned places in one day. I am sure you can find more small villages which are very nice that you can visit.
Enjoy!
