Surprised to get high quality and value in rural Wales

We stayed at Lake Vyrnwy Hotel for a two night break recently. The room was large, well decorated and had the most amazing elevated view down a 5 mile + lake - we just sat in bed looking at the changing light each morning.
The service is very caring and personal, and most of the staff were locals so you could readily get information about local sites and activities. We tried the clay pigeon shooting, which was fun and well run.
The food was the highlight. We thought the first night was superb, but the second night was even better, with a full change of menu. Wines are from £15 and hotel bar drinks seemed reasonable, which is important when there are few other local options. The attached Tavern is more rustic and must be coming up for a redecoration but is good for lunch or a daytime drink.
Overall our break seemed the best value we have had in the UK recently and we will be going back, when they open the new spa next Spring.
Very Disappointing

I read all of the reviews on Trip Advisor before we visited the hotel - we were attending a funtion here and had been booked in by the function organiser. Needless to say, I was rather concerned with some of the reviews and unfortunately my concerns turned out to be well founded.
I have to agree with all previous and subsequent reviewers who were disappointed with the hotel. I can only concur with their opinions on the tired decor, stained unholstery and carpets, laundry bags and food trays left in coridoors for hours, guests being left unattended at breakfast (added to which our order was completely lost!) etc etc.
I agree that the view is wonderful - if our windows had been cleaned, it would have been even more wonderful. It would have also been better if the rooms had been ready in time.
This hotel needs massive investment both inside and out and needs to decide which market it is aiming for - the prices indicate one market but the service and appearance are similar to a mediocre B&B.
We have stayed at really excellent hotels throughout the UK, Europe and the rest of the world (many of which are well reviewed on this website) on both business and holidays but sadly this was not one of them.
Been many times so that says it all

We have stopped at this hotel many times and it's funny the differing reviews it gets.
In our experience, the good points are: the view is the best you can get, the food is excellent, the rooms are large and individual. Two of them have large jacuzzi's for two people albeit with no lake view, and they do excellent break packages.
The down side is the furnishings are tired and there is no pool, sauna etc. That's it.
The road around the lake is flat and 11 miles so its great for cycling, the hotel has some bikes they'll hire. There is a super waterfall at the far end of the lake that's worth the walk, and the coffee shops at the visitor centre by the dam and the one half way round the lake is great. You can get walk maps there too.
Also at the far end of the lake is a road to Bala, which you can drive in 30 minutes. This is some of the wildest and best scenery seen from a car in the UK.
Do overlook the small niggles of this hotel it's not a motorway style Hilton, and that's its attraction.
