We only stayed one night in Cardiff and hence wanted to be fairly central. The Cathedral Road area looked like a good option for us, being only about 10 minutes walk from Cardiff Castle and shops. This leafy road is lined with mid-priced guest houses and B&B's, and we opted for the Lincoln House Hotel. Located in a stunning old stone house (under going exterior restoration when we visited), the Lincoln House Hotel is a clean and well presented guest house. Our room rate of 85 euro included a full Welsh breakfast. There is free parking at the rear of the hotel, plus plenty of on-street parking as well.
I wasn't overly impressed with our room (room 201) - it was a bit small and dark, with only a little window. However, it was clean and more than adequate. I probably wouldn't have been so disappointed except we were travelling with friends and their room (room 203), at the same price, was larger, and nice and bright with lovely big bay windows : ( Another negative was that the owners and staff weren't very friendly - not the usual smiley guest house type of people. Made us feel unwelcome at check in and service at breakfast wasn't too cheery. Oh well, it is a nice enough place to stay, and I would recommend it. I think I am just getting too critical as I get older :-/ Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 118 Cathedral Road, Cardiff CF11 9LQPhone: +44 (0)29 2039 5558Directions: Located halfway along Cathedral Road at the junction of Dyfrig Street in Canton, Cardiff.Website: http://www.lincolnhotel.co.uk/index.php Other Contact: reservations@lincolnhotel.co.uk

a very civilised place to stay by aaaarrgh The Cathedral Road area of Cardiff is by far the nicest place to find pretty hotels and 'bed & breakfast' accommodation. It is a splendid tree-lined avenue which leads out from near Cardiff Castle through the conservation zone of Pontcanna towards Llandaff Cathedral. The Victorian houses are enormous and many have now become hotels. So there is a large number to choose from. I counted 17 along Cathedral Road, and probably missed one or two. Because I live in Cardiff I will not mislead you and pretend I have stayed in 'bed & breakfast' here. But when friends and work colleagues have come to Cardiff they have all stayed on Cathedral Road and enjoyed the experience. One word of warning - Cathedral Road is very long. Despite the fact that it starts close to the city centre, you may want to catch a taxi if you do not have a car and have heavy bags!! In contrast to Cathedral Road, Newport Road (the opposite side of the city) is rougher and more 'seedy', not nearly so nice. The Beeches Hotel by HORSCHECK The Beeches Hotel is a small family run hotel which is situated in a quiet neigbourhood opposite Roath Park. They have about 10 rooms with either private or shared bath. Prices range from 25 to 60 Pounds per night, including a delicious Welsh breakfast. The staff are friendly and helpful. I stayed the last 2 of my 4 Cardiff days in the Beeches Hotel and I can really recommend the place. I stayed the first 2 of my 4 Cardiff days in Austins Guesthouse, where I had a single room with own sink, but shared bath for 28 GBP per night. The price included an average breakfast. Austins is a small, basic guesthouse with a somewhat unfriendly staff. The main advantage of this place is its perfect central location for an affordable price. Theme: Pension/GuesthousePrice: US$20-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Austins, 11 Coldstream Terrace, Cardiff CF11 6LJDirections: Austins Guesthouse is located right in the city centre at the bank of the river Taff, just behind the Millenium Stadium. The Castle can be reached in 5 minutes and the central bus and train station are only 10 minutes on foot away.Website: http://www.hotelcardiff.com/

Obviously the locals didn't like to work in this old office tower so they thought it would be cool to convert it to a hotel. It claims to be one of the first "designer hotels" in the UK, and although it may be a bit exaggerated (we are talking about Ikea-type of design!) the hotel is definitely one of the coolest places I have ever stayed in.
The location is great - less than 10 minutes walk from the train station and close to the city centre. Our room was on the 5th floor and offered great view of the construction site across the street. (The other side would face the railway tracks.) Nevertheless, the room was very spacious and the bathroom included a tub. Breakfast was a selection of bread rolls with jams, cereals and fruit, coffee and teas. The morning we left we took "breakfast to go" which was a packet of fruit, fruit juice, milk, chocolate bars, cereals and yogurt. As I said, I enjoyed staying here very much, but also feel that I need to say that this hotel is not for you if you a) don't like pink colour, b) don't like the idea of John Malkovich staring at you from every wall, c) don't like the idea of having breakfast from a (pink) plastic table, sitting on a (pink) plastic chair and d) don't like the idea of being lost in the corridors every time you need to find a reception. Most importantly, I would think twice of staying here during the summer since the windows cannot be opened and the air conditioning was not very convincing.

So brightly coloured you can't miss it! by M0B1US Given that this is the only hostel in the centre of Cardiff, one could be forgiven for expecting that this hostel might take advantage of its monopolistic status by not trying as hard as it could... This couldn't be farther from the truth! Being in the centre of Europe's youngest and fastest growing capital, some of this vitality has rubbed off on the hostel and the people that run it are justifiably proud of the place they run and the city they live in! Staying here you are bound to enjoy a warm Welsh welcome, and will be able to relax and socialise with fellow travellers in the comfort of this great hostel. All the staff are friendly and experienced travellers who are multilingual in Welsh, English and other languages. They are also very knowledgable about attractions and activities throughout Wales. Their philosophy is to create a haven away from home, and they have amply managed this by laying on a comfortable lounge area with couches, TV, extensive video library, pool table and a couple of internet stations... The facilities include bar/breakfast/dinner area with 'essentials' shop (where I was able to buy a yummy tin of baked beans and sausages!), an information desk, telephone and fax. There is also great security with a buzzer to get in, as well as a coded security door leading to the dorms and sturdy lockers in each room. Facilities: Breakfast Included! Car Parking Available Internet Access Laundry Bicycle Hire Linen Included Curfew @ 2am Credit Cards Accepted Bar Towels Security Lockers Luggage Storage Guest Kitchen Telephone/Fax Facilities Recommended by Let's GO!
Being the only central tourist hostel is a pretty unique feature! It is situated in a quite residential area just 5-10 minutes' walk from the Coach and Train stations of Cardiff, as well as many of the main attractions and the town centre itself! It is an extremely colourful hostel, as shown by the picture below - this is a theme that is prevalent throughout the hostel... There is a downstairs bar area which becomes very lively in the evenings and is actually frequented by local Welsh speakers, so if you want a close-up taste of the language, swing by for a drink! I was there for a national European Cup qualifying game and the atmosphere was brilliant being able to watch the game on a giant projection screen... Some of the many great features here include an attractive roof garden complete with BBQ and hammocks; free tea and coffee throughout the day and free backpack sized personal lockers in each of the dorms. This was a great place and I had a fantastic time there with the staff being incredibly helpful with anything I required! RECOMMENDED!!!
