Must See places in Cardiff
by KittyConduitt81
I'm planning a trip to Cardiff, probably in the summer/fall of next year, and wanted to start a list of things I had to see while I was there. Are there any places you would recommend?
I would love to go for St. David's day in March, but alas I cannot. Are there any other festivals that would be interesting to see?
Thanks,
Katie

You need to go down to Cardiff Bay,take a look round the National Assembly, the little Norwegian Church, the Opera house, take a boat trip.
In the City centre there's Cardiff Castle and the Museum.
August (not sure of the date)they have the gay festival.

Well, I hadn't narrowed down my dates yet. I know it will be in the second half of 2010, but was looking for a festival or concert I would like to attend to help me settle on dates. My plan is to stay for about 5 - 7 days.
I know it's not very much information at this point.
Travel Tips for Cardiff
Match Days in the City Centre
by aaaarrgh
Cardiff city centre turns into a car-free zone when there is a large sports event in the Stadium. Buses stop at the edge of the city centre. The streets are just filled with merry people. Shopkeepers and taxi drivers complain no end, but in my view the carnival atmosphere is great fun. Especially the rugby match days - rugby fans are far better natured than football fans.
The downside is that the pubs and bars are even more full than normal.
And when London's new stadium is completed in 2005, there will be less events taking place at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. This tip was written on the evening of Wales' historic 'Grand Slam' victory of the rugby 2005 '6-nations' tournament. I've never seen Cardiff more crowded! 75,000 people inside the Millennium Stadium watched Wales beat Ireland 32-20. At least another 7,000 watched the match on a large screen outside the City Hall. Every pub, bar and club was filled with Wales and Ireland supporters.
Well done Wales!!
Cardiff University
by M0B1US
Cardiff will be my home for at least the next three years, as this year I started a BSc in Environmental Geoscience at Cardiff University, which has the largest Earth, Ocean and Planetary Sciences faculty in the UK and with a 5* rating, one of the best places to study this subject.
Founded in 1883 and with over 15,000 students, Cardiff is one of the top universities in the country, being seventh out of over 100. It is also well regarded as having the best student union facilities in the country...
Best of all I get to study in the original Main Building part of the university! :-)
Bill Bryson - Notes from a small island
by HORSCHECK
Notes from a small island by Bill Bryson tells the story of Bryson's last trip around Britain before moving back to the States after almost 20 years on the British island.
The book is packed with interesting and funny stories about travelling as it really happens. By reading the book you get a nice insight into the life of the British people and their peculiarities. Some places Bryson visits on his trip are: Bradford, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Llandudno, London, Porthmanog and Thurso.
This book is definitely a must-read for everyone before or after a trip to Britain.
Taff Trail
by Taffster
You can walk the full length of the River Taff, starting at its mouth in Cardiff Bay up to ups source in the Brecon Beacons. Well, that is if you've got time to do the full 55 miles! For those who would just like a gentle stroll along the river you can follow the trail up to Radyr (a few miles) and catch a train back to the centre.
Penarth Pier
by percy961
This 250-metre-long pier was built of cast iron and timber construction in 1894. Following an extensive refurbishment programme ending in 1988, it prides itself on being one of the best remaining Victorian piers in Britain, and is certainly one of the best of its type in Wales.
There are magnificent views, plenty of seating, a refreshments area and amusements for the children. You get all this here, as well as the bracing sea air.
Make sure you try the famous Thayers ice cream, which is made with fresh cream and comes in a host of delicious flavours. The pier is open all day through the summer months.
