by shardi2209
I need to know where i can get hold of some colourant for my paella. Its the orange stuff. I need to know where i can buy it without going to london or Spain! is there any shops in the arcades that sell that kind of thing. herbs and spices and the like.
Thank you,

it,s called saffron and you should be able to buy it in the spice area of any supermarket.

One of the few excellent shops left in Cardiff city centre is Wally's, the delicattessen in Royal Arcade. Maybe you will find some saffron there, it sells all sorts of spices and herbs. I tend to use tumeric instead of saffron in cooking, you can easily find it in any of the supermarkets or large grocers shops.

aaaargh has his head screwed on! - confirmimg you use tumeric to add colour certainly not saffron- the most expensive spice in the world according to my swartz bottle.
Travel Tips for Cardiff
Cardiff Castle
by barryg23
Most of my visits to Cardiff have been for rugby games. The atmosphere in the city is great for the big games and it's a fun experience when 70,000 supporters are here. It can be difficult to find quiet spots on these occasions - to escape the crowds and find a tranquil spot, try Bute Park beside the Castle.
Check out the Welsh Love...

Check out the Welsh Love Spoons as a possible souvenir item. My wife and I had not heard of these before, but their story was interesting and unique that we decided to buy one and display it in our home. Each one is unique and has a different meaning. I know, I know...call me the typical tourist. You won't be able to resist either ;)
Llandaff Cathedral
by HORSCHECK
Llandaff is a s small picturesque village two miles northwest of Cardiff city centre. It is home to an impressive cathedral with two different towers. Llandaff Cathedral is said to be founded in the 6th century, but rebuilt by the Normans in the 12th century. Various restorations and modifications followed in later centuries.
From Cardiff city centre I walked along the Taff Trail through Bute Pak and Sophia Gardens to Llandaff. There are also frequent bus services to Llandaff from Cardiff City Centre (# 25, 33, 62).
Newport
by M0B1US
Newport reminds me of what people say Cardiff used to look like about 20 years ago - rough around the edges and just a little bit grimy...
But worry not, there are plenty of quirky gems to be had in this lively working class city!
All Newport really needs is a bit of a facelift in what otherwise would be an attractive town centre. Apart from a series of highly impressive pieces of public art dotted around the centre, it seems the council hasn't given the place a facelift since the 70's as most of the civic areas look decidedly from that period!
This all looks like it is changing with the ambitious new Riverside Theatre and Arts Centre due to open in October and also the opening of the aptly named New Bridge across the Usk.
Plenty of potential - plenty of character!
Visit the awesome Transporter Bridge - the best working example of its kind in the World today!
Check out the expansive grounds of Tredegar House, one of the best examples of a 17th c. house in Britain and home to the eccentric Morgan family for over 500 years - Captain Morgan anyone? ;-)
Visit nearby Caerleon for the best Roman fix on the British Isles!
Enjoy the gritty nature of the great indy music scene...
The centre of town is very compact and easy to get around. Both the train and bus stations are right in the centre of the city.
There is a reasonably priced tour bus that does a circuit of all of Newport's best attractions - while you're at it, why not 'ferry' your car across the Transporter Bridge!
For more information why not check out my Newport page.

Remember, Newport is only 13 minutes away from Cardiff by train - you'd be crazy not to visit it and Caerleon if you have the time...!
You know you want to... ;-)
