Safe to walk in city at night?

by cathy9510usa

Hi,

I arrive in Cardiff by public transportation around 22:00. Is it safe for a woman alone to walk in center city Cardiff so late at night (area around Queen Street Station)?

Thanks for your help.

Cathy

It's supposed to be a 10 minute walk---from Park Plaza to Mercure Holland House off Newport Road. I did think I'd need to get a taxi, but it won't be a Friday or Saturday, thankfully.

As Ranger says, one would expect to be perfectly safe at 10pm in Cardiff aor any other UK town/city (town centres generally are at that time of evening, lots of people still around).

But you may prefer a taxi because of a) not being certain of your bearings in an unfamiliar place after dark and b) bags (and c) the tendency for all hotels etc everywere to somewhat minimise their walking times to/from places!). In your position I think I might treat myself to one.

Yes, thanks very much to all who replied. I don't need to go to Queen Street Station but just used that as a pointer to the area in which I'd be.

Thanks again! Most helpful of you all.

Travel Tips for Cardiff

Visitor Centre

by uglyscot

The visitor centre is in the same building as the Exhibition, not far from St John's Church, Trinity Way. The entrance is up steps into a glass sort of porch. Inside there are helpful staff, loads of leaflets about the area, books on Cardiff and South Wales, atlases, and other helpful material. A simple map of central Cardiff costs 10p. the accessibility of shops and places to see in a compact area

Highest Point in Cardiff for a drink!?

by M0B1US

This is one of those insider tips that the average tourist would never know about - were it not for committed VT tipsters like myself... ;-)

Anyway, this bar happens to be on the top floor of the UGC Cinema, one of Cardiff's three huge multiplexes.

It is a great place to relax and meet friends before seeing a movie and although in a cinema, is a stylish and well appointed bar with a good range of drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic... The real piece de resistance of this bar however are the great views across the city where you can look down on Cardiff's best landmarks and out as far as the forested hills to the north of the city, day or night...

While you're there, why not see a movie too... ;-)

Rough Guide

by HORSCHECK

To explore Great Britain an up to date guidebook is very useful. I often use the Rough Guide to Britain (England, Wales, Scotland). It covers information for all budgets on the best places to stay, eat and drink. Plenty of recommendations and practical tips on exploring the countries make this book an useful travel companion.

Llandaff - a Village City

by SabrinaSummerville

Llandaff is a very old and very beautiful area within the City of Cardiff. It was originally a village, but then Llandaff Cathedral was built and it was elevated to the status of a City in its own right.

When I was a child I spent a lot of time here during Summer holidays. The famous writer, Roald Dahl, also spent much time here when he was growing up - but you'll be happy to learn we weren't in the same era;-) Dahl tells a story in one of his books about how he stole a sweet from the local sweet shop and, next day, discovered wanted posters all over Llandaff. I have fond memories of that same sweet shop, and went back in February 2008 to discover that it's now a craft/tea shop. The fabulous stone exterior remains the same.

Apart from its very famous Cathedral, Llandaff is worth a visit from an architectural point of view. The buildings are a feast for the eyes. Two elderly aunts of mine live in a house that's more than 250 years old - take a look at the pic of a newell post on the stairs which I have shown here.

Wander around and see if you can find the house with the gravestones in the front garden!

Take a look at the wishing well, though now it's inclined to be full of rubbish.

If you want to rest your weary legs there are quite a few good pubs here too.

Any potential visitors that may be interested in hiking and beautiful scenery - a trip to the Brecon Beacons national park is definately a must. Breathtaking scenery and an old traditional market town. Car ride from Cardiff
