London to Cardiff by bus
by chocogrum
Hi,
I'm planning on taking a national express coach from London to Cardiff soon but my girlfriend is convinced that this is a bad idea. She thinks that it will take ages and be very uncomfortable. I think that it will only be a few hours and surprisingly comfortable. Also, it's far cheaper than going by rail. Can anybody tell me if taking the bus is a good idea or is it a nightmare like my girlfriend thinks it is? Appreciate any help on this!
Thanks.

Hi there
Used to travel by National Express years ago as a student as I lived up north and studied down south. It was certainly a lot cheaper than the train, which I guarantee is still the case. Your journey takes 3 hrs 15 mins approx. according to the NE site so is not really a long journey and it is direct - the site also said something about fun fares from £1 (didn't read details) so personally, if money is a concern, I would take the bus! The coaches are quite comfortable with reclining seats and they used to serve sandwiches and stuff when I went down to London, although not all services do this. I think NE is only a nightmare when you are waiting for hours to make connections like I used to have to do at Victoria Station!

The disadvantages of the coach service are that the route is quite dull, mainly motorway, apart from (normally) a brief stop at the very pretty town of Chepstow. The coach service stopped serving food and refreshments several yeasr ago. But you have an on-board WC, which is useful as long as you are not sitting next to it! And reclining seats can have disadvantages if the person in front decides to recline on your lap. There is a Megabus service too, which takes you to the front of Cardiff Castle for a ridiculously cheap fare, but I hear that the legroom is attrocious. As I am 6' 2" I will personally avoid that one like the plague.
The train service is very good but, like you say, services out of London Paddington can be expensive. And the section between London and Reading can be extremely full during the evening 'rush hour'. It whisks you through the pretty countryside to cardiff in 2 hours and you have a buffet service on board. It may be possible to buy an 'advance fare' ticket and pick it up at a fast ticket machine at Paddington.
Travel Tips for Cardiff
TO BE HONEST I COULDN'T...
by Hel_Griff
TO BE HONEST I COULDN'T RECOMMEND ONE SINGLE THING TO VISIT, BUT THE CASTLE IN THE CENTRE OF THE CITY IS BREATHTAKING. A VISIT TO CARDIFF BAY IS ESSENTIAL. FORMELY KNOWN AS 'TIGER BAY' THIS ONCE THRIVING DOCKAREA HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO A COSMOPOLITAN VILLAGE CATERING FOR EVERYONES NEEDS AND TASTES. MY PERSONAL FONDEST MEMORIES ARE OF CARDIFF ARMS PARK, BEING AN AVID RUGBY FAN. THIS STADIUM HAS NOW BEEN REPLACED BY THE MILLENNIUM STADIUM, A TRULY MAGNIFICANT STRUCTURE. IF YOU'RE LUCKY YOU MAY EVEN CATCH A GAME OF WELSH RUGBY ON YOUR VISIT.
Brains Beer
by HORSCHECK
The most popular local beers in South Wales are the ales of Brains, which are brewed in Cardiff.
The brewery was founded in 1882 and in 1997 it acquired Crown Buckley, which is another local leading brewery. The range of traditional ales include: Brains Bitter, Brains Dark and Brains SA.
During our VT meeting I had a few Pints of Brains SA in the Goat Major and I have to admit that it tastes delicious. And no, I didn't have a hang over the next morning ... ;-)

Millenium Stadium
by YPie
I've been to the Millenium Stadium twice now to watch the RL Powergen challenge cup final, it's a fantastic venue and a fantastic day out.
People might not realise it, but this event this year got a higher attendance than the FA Cup Final at the same ground the week after! I think the football crowd had to be segregated which meant fewer tickets were available - which is why I love the RL game so much!
Although the game sold out, it's relatively easy to get tickets for the game and there are fans of all clubs and neutrals there. There is a real party atmosphere in Cardiff helped by the fact that the stadium is right in the middle of the city centre. The glorious weather this year also helped with people drinking and mingling on the streets of the city before and after the game.
Finding accommodation is more of a struggle though, there doesn't seem to be as much as in Edinburgh or London (other venues the final has been held at in the past few years), and it gets booked up very early. It's worth taking the trouble to find something though, as it's more than a game, it's a weekend event, with local clubs putting on events on Friday and Sunday for supporters to attend.
The next final is in August 2005 in Cardiff.
Castell Coch
by uglyscot
Castell Coch (which means Red Castle in Welsh), stands on a wooded hillside above the village of Tongwynlais, north of Cardiff, Wales. It was was probably founded in the early thirteenth century by a Welsh chieftain named Ifor Bach. The De Clare family claimed it because of its strategic importance, commanding both the plains area and the entrance to the Taff valley. The castle was rebuilt in stone and consisted of a keep, towers, an enclosed courtyard and a gatehouse.
By the mid-19th century little of the original Norman castle remained above ground , when the 3rd Marquess of Bute decided to rebuild it as a medieval-style dwelling for his family. Its interior is similar to his other castle in Cardiff.
The castle was a romantic folly and too small and too difficult to access for the family to live in.
Nowadays it is a popular tourist attraction, and has appeared in films and Tv..
We tried on more than one occasion to go to it, but could not find the way, in spite of following all the brown tourist signs and using a GPS.
In the end, VT-er pattypoo came to the reswcue and took me there.
A Daytrip to Penarth
by M0B1US
If you have an extra day or two in Cardiff, why not take a trip out to the Victorian Seaside resort of Penarth (Link to my Penarth VT Page) only four miles to the south...
You can reach there easily by train, bus or boat and there is plenty to do with its gift shops, restaurants and old-fashioned pier.
The town centre has several stylish cafes, galleries and delicatessens to keep you occupied, and there are a number of nice walks through landscaped gardens dating from the Victorian era, or along the cliff tops with plenty of benches along the way to enjoy the views and breathe in the sea air.
At the foot of Penarth hill, the marina offers a modern new face, with its waterfront homes, collection of yachts and at least one recommended restaurant. This part of town is also linked to Cardiff Bay by ferry and boasts access to the Cardiff Bay Barrage.
A little to the south of Penarth is Lavernock Point where Marconi succeeded in the first ever radio transmission over water to Flat Holm island in the Bristol Channel.
