Budget/Hostel Accomodation in Cardiff

by romancandle

A friend and I will be staying in Cardiff for a few days in April, but are students on a budget. Any suggestions as to where we can stay? Our range is £20-40 a night, tops! Cheap B&Bs, hostels (preferably with double rooms) and any other suggestions welcome/desperately sought.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Maybe the Austins B&B could be an option. I once stayed there for two nights. It is centrally located and still resonably priced.

You find more information about it on my Cardiff page and also on:
http://www.hotelcardiff.com/

There they state: "Bed and breakfast from under £20.00 per person"

So I hope this helps

...by the way: I am not Horsecheck, but HORSCHECK. My nickname has nothing to do with checking horses, but was derived form a person who laughs like me, but that's another story.

HORSCHECK :-)

Travel Tips for Cardiff

What A Bootiful Place

by Eric1977

Great City, Great people and Great architecture.
By the way Paul Blakes mammy asked me to find him some friends. He studies Medicine at Cardiff University for more information contact me. Love seeing the Millenium stadium as you pull in on the train and the area surrounding the castle is cracking.

Brains Beer

by Myfanwe

Brains Beer is Brewed just minutes outside of the City Centre, just behind the Central Train Station. If you are arriving in Cardiff by train the Brains Brewery may well be the first thing you see. Their Beer is served widely throughout Wales and the Brewery owns hundreds of pubs selling their finest ales and very good locally produced food.

Ninian Park

by HORSCHECK

The old Ninian Park is home to Cardiff City FC (Bluebirds) that play in the English Championships League. The Stadium was opened in 1910 and has a capacity of 20.000. When I was there at the end of May 2005 the season was already over and unfortunately, the grass was just being exchanged. Nevertheless, I got an idea of the atmosphere in such a small old Welsh Stadium.

Glamorgan Heritage Coast

by M0B1US

I had the pleasure of visiting this dramatic limestone cliff scenery and spectacular wave cut platforms as part of my introductory degree course field trip.

This beautiful coastline is a little over 10km to the SW of Cardiff and stretches for 22km from West Aberthaw to Porthcawl. It is divided into two distinct areas with beautiful butter coloured cliffs making up the most part and some of the largest dunes in Europe at Merthyr Mawr at its western edge.

We joined it at Nash Point which is roughly halfway along the coast and a suitably windy headland. From here we walked NW along the top of the cliffs with spectacular views of the Welsh coastline below us and the English coastline out across the Bristol Channel.

As part of our fieldwork, we were able to witness such features as coastal erosion and the excellent layering effect of the Carboniferous (350 million year old) limestone, in particular the way the wave cut platform of the beach below had a neatly 'stepped' appearance.

We walked as far as Southerndown before taking the coach back to Cardiff, after a wonderfully exhilirating day out where breathing the great lungfuls of fresh air made you feel glad to be alive!

There are also some excellent sandy beaches along the way, which definitely look worthy of a return visit during summer.

Other features along the coast include the ruins of Dunraven Castle, a 19th century mansion which stands on the headland overlooking Dunraven Bay and the Glamorgan Heritage Coast Centre, where you can learn more about the heritage coast.

Another attraction roughly halfway along the heritage coast is the medieval St. Donat's Castle, which is now a school. There are guided tours of the castle during the summer months. Tel (+44 (0)1446 792271).

It is possible to walk both on the cliffs above the coast and also along the shoreline as long as you follow common sense by not walking too close to the cliffs and making sure you are not trapped by the rapidly changing tides, which have the second highest tidal ranges in the World.

Gelynis Fruit Farm and Vineyard

by M0B1US

A vineyard in Wales!!?

You have to be kidding, right?

Well actually it's true! Add the fairytale Castell Coch in the background and you might be forgiven for thinking you're in Germany or the Loire Valley instead of little old Cardiff...

I've put Gelynis Farm with Castell Coch as it makes a refreshing little stop off if you are visiting the castle, either by car or on the Taf Trail.

There are plenty of fun activities to be had here, especially in summer when you can PYO (Pick your own) Strawberries, Raspberries, Logan/Tay & Blackberries into punnets for the twin satisfactions of picking fruit fresh off the bush and at a much cheaper price than you would get in a shop!

Nestled amongst the vineyard and fruit bushes is a nice little seating area where you can enjoy the 'fruits' of your labours, a glass of the Seyval Blanc grape that is grown here - nothing spectacular, but still a novelty for Wales! Or some lovely Mr Creamy Ice Cream - the Rum and Raisin was... Mmmm!

You can also pick your own vegetables, buy honey or jam, all produced/grown here.

They even cut a 'Maize' Maze here every year and have a Pumpkin Workshop every Hallowe'en...
