Big sculpture of hands in Cardiff

by pietershoek

Who can tell me more about the sculpture of the big hands in Cardiff?
For instance who has made it, when was it placed there. Size?, etc.
May be a link to local website with more information or a nice picture.

Thanks and kind regards, Joop

Travel Tips for Cardiff

The weather and how to survive it

by awladhassan

Cardiff can be very pleasant weatherwise in Summer, but when shopping beware that in the pedestrian centre cool winds can suddenly hit you when you pass a side street.
Like other parts of south Wales , rain seems to be more common than in other places. It often rains for days on end. Having an umbrella in your handbag is a good idea.
In autumn it can be cold and wet. We had been away from the house for three days once, and returned to a bitterly cold house because the central heating had blown a fuse. We had to sleep in our clothes and pile as many blankets, coats etc on the beds to keep from freezing, before an electrician could come the following afternoon.
In winter it can be bitterly cold, but with the snow on the ground it can also be very bieautiful.

Cardiff Bay

by kingfisher

Cardiff Bay is the recent developing business area of Cardiff. From Cardiff Bay.
You can visit National Techniquest, welsh Industrial Maritime Museum and the red Pier Head Building is its landmark.
Also, you'll see the beautiful view, many restaurants(there is a Japanes restaurant, very nice but quite expensive), pubs, etc.
August is the Cardiff festival, during the time there are many activities hold in Cardiff Bay.

Left Luggage facility at Tourist Information

by aaaarrgh

It is useful to know that you can leave bags and suitcases at Cardiff's Visitor Centre. They currently charge £3 per item for up to one day.

The Tourist Information Office is located in the Old Library building, which is on The Hayes in the centre of the city. Normally it is open from about 10am to 6pm.

For a long time Cardiff had no 'left luggage' office at all. Hurrah for the clever person who has now filled that gap :-)

I live in Penarth which is 6km south west of Cardiff and it lies on the north shore of the Bristol Channel. It has a pier, restuarants, bars and on a clear day, views of the English coast. In summer, there are regular pleasure trips by paddle steamer to place all along the Bristol Channel coast.

Caerphilly Castle

by M0B1US

Situated a short 9 mile train journey to the north of Cardiff, the town of Caerphilly is home of Caerphilly Castle built in 1268 by the Marcher Lord, Baron Gilbert de Clare in defence against his rival Llewelyn ap Gruffyd.

Being the first concentric castle to be built from scratch and covering about 30 acres of land, Caerphilly castle is vast in scale making it the second largest castle in the UK after Windsor castle and one of the most important in Europe, prompting the poet Tennyson to write: ‘It isn't a castle – it’s a town in ruins’.

Surrounding the castle is a huge moat and lake system encompassing three man-made islands, created by damming the Nant Y Gledr stream.

This place is awesome and exudes pure power in its sheer size - strangely though there is less to actually do here in terms of tours and exhibitions than the relatively miniscule Castel Coch. Apart from actually walking the ruins, which in itself takes quite a time, all there is to see is an exhibition over three floors in the rebuilt NW tower, the Great Hall and a number of siege engines. Liberally dotted around the grounds are a number of information panels which give you a self guided tour of the castle.

There is also an attractive visitor centre/shop inside the castle where you can hire an audio tour, and there are regular events held here such as firing the siege weapons...

Check out my Caerphilly Castle travelogue pages on my Caerphilly page.

The website below is the official website of the owners of Caerphilly Castle, though not necessarily the best...

For detailed info on castle design

My favourite website of Caerphilly is the Castle Explorer series.
