absolutely loved it , felt like a five star hotel
My fiance and myself stayed at welburn lodge for 4 nights and from the second we arrived were welcomed by stella and steve who were wonderfull. we stayed in abbey where i proposed to my girlfriend by the four poster bed in a room that you would die for. The breakfast was superb and we havent had and will not have one better as all the produce is fresh and locally aquired. i hope to return many times this year and would like to say a big thanks for everything to stella and steve.
Nothing too much trouble!

Just returned from a 2 night stay with my partner and we have had a wonderful time. Steve and Stella greeted us as we got out of the car and just could not do enough for us. Our room was absolutely beautiful and so in keeping with the style of the house. We didn't even have to worry about where we were going to eat in the evening as Stella suggested somewhere and even rang and booked us the table! When they offered to take us and pick us up we just could not believe it!
Stella even recommended a dvd to watch from their collection and when we got back in the evening Stella had put it in our room. It's these little touches which made our stay so special.
Breakfasts were great and did not need much else to eat for the rest of the day until the evening. There is something for all tastes and so well cooked.
On our departure we were presented with a little package for our trip home.
We are planning to go back in a couple of months with a couple of friends who I know will love it just as much as we did.
Thank you so much for our stay and we WILL see you again soon. Congratulations on doing such a first class job in the restoration of the house .
Loved Welburn Lodge
This IS the perfect B&B. Having returned from the most relaxing weekend away, we are still floating over a week later. The B&B is a beautiful old building, attentively restored by Stella and Steve, gorgeously appointed rooms with views of the sweetest garden. The breakfast was top notch and plentiful. From quality toiletries to an impressive DVD it was impossible not to relax. Importantly, it's only a short drive from York but far enough away to feel refreshed by country air amidst arresting scenery - it's an ideal location. Stella and Steve make a wonderful team and couldn't be more warm, welcoming or helpful with their knowledge of the area, road directions and restaurant tips (thank you both). We spent an afternoon at the nearby Castle Howard (a must), ate at the local Welburn pub, The Crown & Cushion (another must) and drove over the moors to Whitby by the sea. Can't wait to do it all again. A word of caution about the busy road bordering the B&B - it's a challenge turning right from the B&B onto the main road and it's almost easier to turn left and then use the island crossing a little way down to turn back in right direction - just ask Steve. But noise from traffic is not an issue and we honestly can't wait to return.
Fantastic Place, Amazing Hosts
My Husband and I have just returned from a 2 night stay at Welburn Lodge and everything was perfect!
We loved our room (we stayed in Abbey), decor amazing and fantastic bathroom.
Breakfasts were to die for, can recommend the full english!
Stella and Steve were the best of hosts, even driving us to the local pub on Sunday night. Sean & I felt like we were treated like old friends.
I loved our stay and would love to stay again!
Brilliant location and hosts
We had the most brilliant time with excellent hosts Steve and Stella. The accomodation was superb and of the highest standard and Stellas breakfasts were second to none! We wish we could have stayed longer and hope to get back soon.
Look no further because this is the best it can get.
Andrew and Suze.
The hotel was absolutly fabulas, we had such a tremendous time there. Celebrated 40th birthday and couldn't have wished for better hosts. They made us feel so welcome the bed, shower atmosphere and food were second to none. We have recommended this hotel to all out friends and will deffinetly be going again and staying longer.
You will not be disappointed
When you book a place to stay you usually hope it is as good as the brochure says. Well have no fear here, Welburn Lodge is everything they say it is with the added value of Steve and Stella. They have made this interesting building into a home from home. Very quaint and pretty with all mod cons. We stayed in the Abbey with the four poster bed and lovely ensuite. We were only there 3 nights but the room was serviced everyday. Infact the whole house was exceptionally clean. The hosts were so friendly we felt we had known them for years. We would love to tell you about Stella's unusual recipes for breakfast, but we feel you will just have to go and find out for yourselves!
Outstanding and highly recommended!
Welburn Lodge was far and away the loveliest, most comfortable and luxurious B&B that we stayed in on a recent tour of northern England. Steve and Stella were outstanding hosts and their breakfasts alone make a stay with them worth the money.
The rooms are decorated beautifully and tastefully with new televisions, dvd players and a range of discs to choose from. Our 4 poster bed was gorgeous and the bathroom was large and beautifully decorated with marble.
No small detail was overlooked.
We enjoyed our stay with them immensely and found the location ideal for day trips to York (especially since the bus stops outside their door) and to Castle Howard. It's a lovely place and we hope to stay there again in the future.
What a Find, The Best . . . wish we could return this week!
Welburn Lodge exceeds the expectation one might have looking over the excellent webpage and/or brochure! There is nothing misleading about it on the website, as in some cases! And, it's better than it appears there!
The owners exemplify the very highest possible standards among B&B owners and/or managers, based on our 40 years of traveling abroad and staying in B&B's.
Stella and Steve are genuine folks, very personable and friendly, but never in the slightest intrusive. They have come to this with care and joy and they share it with everyone. They constantly go above and beyond in terms of helping out guests.
The location is just great for folks who want to visit both York and the Yorkshire region. The bus into town as they describe on their site is just steps from the house and the ride into York proper was very easy, even for people like us who have rarely ridden a bus anywhere! There's a good pub just up the road. We should have walked, but Stella and Steve offered to drive us our first night there. How often does that happen?
The house, itself, was reportedly a former lodge for Howard Castle, a short distance away, and is an historic listed property. Stella and Steve have done an exceptional job of making the original house into a quality B&B. A former owner had added a separate, but attached cottage in the 70's which blends in well and that is where Steve and Stella live, so they're available, but they have their privacy and guests have theirs, too.
To any American readers . . . you'll appreciate the bathroom size and fixtures. We were upstairs, overlooking the entry gardens (blossoms everywhere) and the bathroom (lavatory) had the biggest shower we found in England, just like at home! They did a great job on the B&B interior remodel. We constantly commented on the attention given with colorful, tasteful, well thought out decorating. In nice weather, there are tables and chairs for guests in the gardens.
We enjoyed an excellent bed (with quality sheets and blankets, not just an overly warm duvet) in a room that was nice and quiet at night.
Don't be put off by the house's location on the road to Scarborough or when you see on their map that there's a caravan park nearby . . . first, although the road can be busy, you don't hear it at all; secondly, the caravan park is hidden amongst trees and behind berms and is not all that close.
The breakfasts are just the best we had in all of England, including those $30 plus per person ones in the 5 star hotel. If you like oatmeal at all and aren't a total teetotaler, be sure to try Stella's Bailey's porridge . . . she'll even cook it for you along with your full English breakfast (excellent quality all and cooked to perfection). . . and with a smile.
Steve provided us printed out personalized maps for traveling up through North Yorkshire. They also recommended what could have been a nice little walk instead of seeing it on our drive away, a little ruined abbey nearby; along with a scenic route over to Bronte's town on the way south.
We are most happy to have persisted in our choice of Welburn Lodge over all the counter-recommendations by folks in the York forum who thought we were silly not to stay in the town.
We generally do prefer staying either outside small villages or in the countryside when traveling in any country in Europe, so we chose Welburn. It was a 5 star choice in a B&B that will surely long be rated #1 amongst those near York. The location is a perfect "stepping off point" for driving through nearby villages and countryside up to the Channel, even, if you wish. Just wish we'd booked for more than 3 nights!
Stella and Steve, you are tops in our book! Your B&B is the best we met in England, Wales and ranked at the very top of any we've stayed in any of about 12 countries!
We miss you! We wish you continued success and happiness. Jim & Sharon
One of the cleanest, friendliest and beautiful bed and breakfasts we have ever stayed in. The hospitality extended by both Stella and Steve was outstanding and we were sorry that we were not staying longer. We felt like we were leaving old friends.
The location is great for exploring York and its surrounds with great country pubs easily accessible for dinner.
A great experience don't overlook this great place if wanting to stay in the area.
Stella and Steve thanks so much for being great people you are few and far between. Have another 'snag for us'.
