Appalling place

This easily rates as the worst hotel I've stayed in. Problems started as soon as we disembarked from shuttle to discover that cars parked all along the road prevented the shuttle bus from going to the hotel entrance, so we had to lug all our bags 300 yards to the hotel. The receptionist (who was aloof and unwelcoming)seemed to have no record of our reservation. Check-in took almost half an hour (not funny when you've just arrived off a 10 hour flight from Hong Kong) - no apology or explanation given for the delay. Our room, when we finally got to it, wasn't ready. The sofa bed, made up for my partner's 2 kids, was made up with single sheets and 1 single blanket - entirely inadequate for 2 people. When we tried to order a drink on room service we were told there would be a half hour delay. The corridors were cluttered up with uncollected trays which looked as if they'd been there for hours. We wrote a complaint form but were not surprised when we did not receive a response.

Good value and surprisingly good meal

Like many, we used this prior to our flight from LHR. We had no problem with the transport aspect. We were pleasantly surprised by the buffet dinner. The room was clean and comfortable.

After arriving at the hotel following a 13 hour flight from Hong Kong we were given an awful dark and smelly room so we requested a change. We were given a much better room (it was supposed to be an executive room but it wasn't that nice). After having a tube of crisps from the mini bar we left the packet on the bedside table. After I had been asleep for an hour I was awoken by rustling coming from the crisp packet and after switching the light on was shocked to discover a very large cockroach!! We rang down to the front desk to once again request a room change but after being told that not all the rooms have cockroaches only 2 or 3 (!!) we decided to drive home. By this time it was 2pm in the morning! We have complained to holiday extras who we booked the hotel through and they are looking into the matter. This hotel is shabby and unclean (note the cockroaches) and the comment made about room service trays being left out on the corridor for hours is true!
I would not stop here again if you paid me!

Best beds in England!!

We stayed here the night before an early flight home. The special rate advertised in the newspaper a few weeks before was far better than any rate I had looked for on the internet - at least half the price PLUS breakfast and included the VAT!!! It is usually better to wait to book one of these specials if it is later in the holiday. But the best of all were the beds - absolute heaven. They were wider than most single beds in England and very comfortable! Breakfast was the full English buffet and was ok.

Stayed here in late July. This hotel is disgusting. The place was filthy, and the rooms badly needed renovation. The corridors had not been vacuumed for ages, and there was food left lying outside rooms for hours.
The first room I was given had no air conditioning, just a fan by the bed, and the weather was sweltering. I was moved to another room, which was cooler but had disintegrating furniture.
It was also very expensive. Avoid at all costs and use the very nice Crowne Plaza nearby.

Poor service

Booked this through Holiday extras at a good price but it was not a pleasant stay. i had booked a triple room but our room was cramped with barely room for the sofa bed. worst of all we had only 2 pillows between 3 of us and so i phoned down for extras-waited 20 mins, phoned again-all very polite but nothing came- by now we were tired and ready to sleep so i phoned again pointing out that I had requested the pillows over an hour ealier-again polite aplogies but no action !1We had to improvise pillows and eventually got to sleep. it was a depressing start to our holiday and i would certainly not stay there again if they care so little for their guests. when we checked out I mentioned it to the desk staff but they had nothing to say !

This hotel staff could not get anything right! We had booked a room with a pull-out couch bed and did not get one. We were told that we could get one for an extra charge but they claimed that the problem was with expedia and we should check with them - except that the hotel internet was down! We arrived at 3 pm on a Sunday and all of their restaurant service was closed. Their cash machine was out of order, the shower curtain was moldy and the concierge was rude and uptight. When the front desk offered to connect a call to my airlines free of charge, the phone operator called me a liar and hung up on me - and then charged me for a call that was never made. The hotel is a considerable distance from the airport. Far enough away that most of the rental car agencies will charge you to shuttle you to them. If you need a shuttle to the airport, it will cost you 4 pounds per person. Oh, and there was a dead pidgeon laying splatted in front of the hotel. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

Just what we expected

As a couple, we stayed here for 2 nights mainly for a local business meeting (nothing to do with the airport) in early October.
This is a typical large airport hotel (10 floors) built in the 1970s. It used by many airlines, so much so that there is a seperate flight crew check-in counter.
Booking a "leisure saver" break on the HI UK website at £55 per night including breakfast for the two us meant it was cheaper than lodge type establishments nearer to the meeting. However do remember to add the £8 per 24 hour car parking fee.
Arriving at 22:30, check in was fine but the first room they gave us - although clearly marked as non-smoking - absolutely reeked of smoke (so much so that you could smell it in the corridor outside the door). So it was back to Reception who without fuss but with apologies changed our room to an executive standard room, which was nice and freah to walk into.
Interesting comparing the two rooms - the bed was bigger in the standard room (king vs Queen). Both had fridges, but only the Exec room was stocked with one of those mini bars that electonically charge your bill if you lift an item. Both rooms had settees that would convert to extra bedding, but the Exec would be very tight with more than 3 people, of any age ,in the room. Otherwise they were comparable with the Exec room slightly more recently renovated. Even in the non smoking Exec room there was a cigarette burn mark on the bed table - so they obviously cannot rely on all guests to play fair. I guess such surruptious smoking might even get worse in 2007 when smoking is banned in all English hotels.
Rooms are triple glazed and so are very insulated from all external noise - it is far enough away from runways not to suffer airport noise even outside the hotel - but it is close to the M4 motorway and the other busy airport roads. Internal noise was the usual door bangs at 4am etc associated with an airport hotel but was better than many.
Breakfast was the usual buffet arrangement with a chef filling the standard hot dishes from the other side of the counter. It was quiet (at least at our leisurely breakfast time) and the chef was happy to provide a non-standard item (such as a poached egg rather than the standard fried or scrambled). There was a good selection of breads and pastries but the hot water / coffee service needed chasing if you wanted more than one cup.
Cleaning was fine but did try to enter our room at 7:30 am even on the morning of our check out - which we had not done.
We didn't use room service or the gym.
Car parking was a bit hit or miss and, although we were not at a busy period for the airport, cars were parked all over the place - there is a section marked for long term parking but this seemed to have overflowed onto many lawned and other areas. As we came and went many times - sometimes we were lucky with a space in a convenient short stay car park other times we were not.
In summary it met and indeed passed our (modest) expectations and I would stay again (at the price).

Stayed for 1 night before our flight the next day with 2 weeks car parking included, excellent value indeed.
Will do the same if travelling form Heathrow again.

its a very nice large hotel
very clean, very quiet and fantastic service from the staff
although it is a bit pricey
