No hotels

Although I've been to the Vatican half a dozen times, I never list it among the countries I've visited because I have never actually stayed overnight there (my own personal criterion for having 'visited' a country). As far as I know, there is no tourist accommodation in the Vatican.

The Spring House Hotel: The Spring House Hotel

This is a smallish, family-run hotel with very cheery rooms and baths for a fairly modest 102,000 lire for a double (at least that's what they were last summer). Best of all, it's incredibly well-located, all of about five minutes' walk from the entrance to the Vatican Museums in a very quiet neighborhood -- for Rome, anyway. You won't be bothered by the sounds of motorcycles at all hours here!

A private B&B

We had a bit of a hiccup with our accommodation but it worked out in the end. We had wanted to stay in the Trastevere area of Rome because it had been recommended. We made online reservations with a place called 'Antica Trastevere', which looked like a nice B&B. When I phoned to add an aditional night, the landlady (who speaks English quite well) asked if I minded whether we stayed in the B&B or a self catering flat nearby. I said either was fine so she told me to phone when we arrived so she could give us the address. When we phoned from the train station, the landlady gave us an address and a phone number for the landlady of the flat. We phoned and confirmed with this lady and she gave us directions on how to get there. Since we were not all that familiar with Rome, we did not realise that the flat was actually near the Vatican - a good distance away from Trastevere. We managed to get there and discovered our 'self-catering' flat was actually a room in this woman's apartment. We weren't expecting this so it was a little disappointing. However, the landlady was very nice and our room had a small balcony which looked out at St Peter's. We had breakfast (coffee, sweet rolls and orange juice) brought to our room every morning and we could sit and eat while listening to the bells of St Peter's. It turned out to be a really lovely place to stay.
