Great central location

The Raddison occupies the top few floors of the ISR Plaza and is right on Fountain Square making it super convenient to downtown Baku. While the rooms proper are a bit dated, the building is nice and you pass through a manned guard station to get to the elevators so the sense of security is high. The suites are nice for long-term stays giving a seperate living and sleeping area.

One warning, vehicle trafic in the area is horrible especially during working hours. If you arrive from Frankfurt or London, you're probably getting in late enough that it's not an issue. If you're trying to get out during the day, walk a couple blocks and catch a cab near the Bulvar.

Unique Quality: The hotel's reception area shares the top floor (17th) with a pretty good Thai restaurant, Baan Thai, and typical hotel bar (overpriced and underwhelming). Skip the bar but hit Baan Thai to satisfy a craving for Pad Thai, lemongrass soup and is good and you get a great view of the city. The whole restaurant looks out over fountain square and to the Caspian beyond.

The darker side of the area

Unique Quality: One item to keep in mind is that this hotel is basically the center of an area that does have a very organized criminal element. However, this is not to say that the area is dangerous. On the contrary, the hotel is a center point for some of the higher-up members of the syndicate and therefore the area around the hotel is very low crime. They do not want attention brought to the area. I found that I could reasonably walk around streets after dark and early in the morning even when they were lightly occupied and no problems arose.

The hotel experience

The rooms are well appointed and clean. Views are panoramic. I do recommend this over a number of the other hotels except perhaps the Hyatt. Attentive staff. Had a problem with a non-flushing toilet that they had to fix twice but they did so without delay.

I did have problems with rather cavalier handling of the breakfast services. One day it did not open for nearly an hour after the scheduled time. Once there was no gas to prepare hot meals at dinner. That turned out to be of minor inconvenience since they could heat water to boil pasta and made some nice dishes even without gas. The gas issue can be a problem at any establishment at any time in Baku.

Unique Quality: In the center of the up-scale area of town. Near very interesting plazas and parks. Many things to see within walking distance. Generally a safe area to travel in. But remain reasonably conscious of where you are and your surroundings. Good advice in any urban area. Ignore the hawkers with their street wares. Cute trinkets but not worth the price. Haggle if you must.

Radisson SAS Plaza Hotel

This hotel is located on the top floor of the ISR Plaza in the heart of Baku. It is just a few steps from fountain square and the pedestrian zone and a few minutes from the old town and the seafront. The 40 suites have a nice view of the city and there is a large indoor pool for hotel guests on the ground floor of the building.
