Baku to Turkmenbashi

by newted300

Are there direct flights from Baku, Azerbaijan to Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan? I'm planning to go to Baku in June and was thinking that it would be great if i could fly direct to Turkmenbashi and back to Baku a couple of days later as my schedule is quite tight. Maybe i can go by ferry but from what I've read, the service seems to be unreliable. Can anyone advise me if direct flights are available?

Travel Tips for Baku

No Photos

by josephescu

"Hei sir, no photo!" - this is what the guard in front of this bank may have shouted at me, in Azeri, while i was trying to gather more evidence of the "booming Baku" from a banking perspective. Nevertheless, i blamed myself not speaking Azeri and took the picture, to the guards despair: "Bank, bank.....no photo!"

Footy

Football, England v azerbaijan, 13th october 2004, world cup qualifer. 1-0 to Enlgand, Michael Owen 22mins.
Winds of 60mph, and heavy rain nearly had the game called off, but the atmosphere was good, the police treated us well, and they even sold beer at half time! all in all, a great visit to an interesting city!

Very Rich Menu

by Nuclei about Sultan Restaurant

This is a Turkish Restaurant. It is big and garden is covered with "tent" durng winter. The best thing about the restaurant is very rich menu. You can order grill, seafood, kebaps, Italian, Turkish, local, vegetarian, etc. The grill is inside the restaurant, next to you. You can see and smell the food while cooking. Grill is recommended.

Shirvan Shah palace

by traveloturc

The Shirvan-Shah's Palace ensemble (15-16th century) was built when the Shah's capital was moved from Shemakha to Baku. This was the most prominent architectural complex in the medieval city. Some of the builings in the complex far surpass the palace in splendour. Despite having built in different periods without a single plan the several contruction form an harmonious whole.
The palace is a two story building, with service rooms on the ground floor and state rooms on the uper floor. Built in the 15th century by Halilullah first, the palace remained intact a hundred years. After Baku was taken by Shah Ismail the palace was abandoned.
Adjacent to the palace is the Divankhane rotunda. crowned with a faceted cupola of pointed arches, echoing a similar arcade in the courtyard. The stone carving of the portal - with intricate ornamentation and kufic inscriptions - is striking. Divankhane and Harem at Shirvan Shah's palace is Unesco world heritage site
In the complex you can also see the 14th century the Bei-Kubad Madrassa Mosque, the Shah's family tomb (the turbe) and the tomb of Seid Yahia Bakuvi (a court astronomer) the Turkish built eastern Gate and the baths.

Maiden's Tower

by maykal

Maiden's Tower is probably the most striking of Baki's ancient buildings...nobody really knows why it was built the shape it is, but there are many stories behind it, the most wel-known being that of a king who wanted to marry his own daughter...she agreed, but wanted him to build her a tower first...and when he had finished the tower, she threw herself off the top, to avoid marrying him! If you want to follow in her footsteps, you can climb the tower for a small fee, although throwing yourself off isn't totally recommended!!
From the roof, you can see the whole of Baki's old town and beyond.
The tower used to be on the seafront, but now a busy road and a wide promenade built on reclaimed land come between it and the Caspian Sea.
