Most middle eastern counties have a big problem with stray cats & dogs. Many people buy pets, don't castrate/neuter them and when they leave the middle east they simply leave their animals behind on the streets, where they multiply with thousands of unwanted kittens and puppies every year.
Instead of going to a pet shop (which usually import animals that are far too young and from "shady" breeders in eastern europe) why don't you adopt one of the animals at a shelter? (they also have pure-breeds looking for homes...)
There is a large one in Manama, the BSPCA (Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals):

If you adopt one from BSPCA its only 30 Bahrain Dinar for a female & 15 for a male! Plus you can help a animal for the sake of Allah.

Yeah in bahrain females are so expensive and males you can take them by Kg hahaha :P

I reckon the females are "more expensive" because the rescue society spays/neuteres their animals and the operation on a female is more complicated and costs more.
