Solid Business Travel Choice

The Diplomat may not be the newest or most glamourous hotel, but with solid service, mostly recently renovated rooms (many with great sea views), good food, and bustling atmosphere, it's a very pleasant place to stay.

Choosing a business-floor room adds significantly to the amenties and extras, including an excellent breakfast buffet (great fruit, salmon, eggs, sausage, etc.), sodas and sandwiches throughout the day, and a lovely selection of hors d'oeuvres and cocktails in the evening. Also included are access to free Internet service in the lounge and a dedicated concierge that can be very useful in making reservations, reconfirming filghts, etc. While it raises the cost pretty significantly (we paid a shade over US$200 a night for a double), it makes the difference between an ordinary and a first-rate stay.

Unique Quality: Food: The Kontiki restaurant has an interesting Pan-Asian menu, ranging from sushi to good roast duck in a vaguely Thai sauce.

Pool/gym/spa: This is where the facility starts to show its age -- not to mention the difference between a basically business hotel and a resort. The pool is pleasant but unmemorable, and the spa facilities cramped and faded. If you're looking for a beach getaway with all the trimmings, head to the nearby Novotel.
