Well, if you come to Bahrain...

Well, if you come to Bahrain and stay in, let us say, Le Royal Meridien which is, with no doubt, the best hotel in the island, you’ll definitely say, Bahrain is a paradise! Simply because 99% of the times 5 stars hotels don’t portray the real picture. Beautiful sandy beach, clean blue water, luxurious rooms, exotic halls, and waiters with the best elocution you could ask for! Not that Bahrain is not beautiful, but unfortunately, for an island, nice and clean beaches are rare to find! The Meridien's Beach is one of the few good ones!

Gulf Hotel: Gulf Hotel

This is a five star hotel located across the street from the Grand Mosque. The rooms are fabulous, there are a wide variety of restaurants, and it has a pool and workout facilities. If you visit the Bahrain, stop in at Sherlock Holmes ( the pub located in the Gulf Hotel) and ask for me. If I'm not there, then sit down and have a pint- you'll be glad you did.

Although a little more...

Although a little more expensive than some would prefer, The Gulf Hotel is one, if not 'THE' nicest hotel in Bahrain. For a little more than what you would pay at some barely livable motel you can have a suite that would exceed your expectations, a staff at your beckon call, a variety of excellent cuisine, state of the art excercise equipment, massuers, and a swimming pool that would make your mouth water.

Besides its amneties, the views from almost every room or suite are breathtaking. From the hotel you can see the guest palace and the Grand Mosque. And as if that's not enough, the Hotel overlooks the bay. The staff is professional, friendly and helpful. If you're not quite sure about something, all you have to do is ask one of the front desk clerks or management and you will have all the information you need in no time. This may not seem important but if you've been to parts of the middle east this little tip may make more sense to you...The rooms are well insulated to keep the sounds and the heat out, this is very important, especially if you are visiting during the holy month of Ramadan. Just in case non unified prayers over loud speakers at 2 o'clock in the morning isn't your idea of a 'wake up call'.

Le Meridien: Le Meridien

One of the finest hotels I have stayed at in the world. It has a wonderful pool, which is a great escape from the middle eastern summer heat. It has several wonderful restaurants. It has its own private beach, with its own lagoon. The lagoon is protected by nets from the Gulf, keeping out the large number of jellyfish.

The airline paid for my hotel...

The airline paid for my hotel room because of a flight delay. The hotel they sent me to was the Bahrain International Hotel. It was clean and well run and I liked it just fine for the short time I was there. Photo here is of the streets of Manama near the hotel.

I live here, but the top...

I live here, but the top hotels for absolute luxury are Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort, which is as overpriced & overrated as most 5* hotels. Plenty of lower quality hotes, but VERY expensive - not a backpacker's paradise. You are better off just chatting to one of the thousands of European (& other) expats in a bar & begging a floor for the night! Everyone is very friendly out here, honestly!

It is not a cheap destination...

It is not a cheap destination for backpackers for sure. It is quite difficult to find a hotel with rates below 40 USD.
I was staying in Regency Inter.Continental which is in the top level when it comes to pricing. Although it is the 5 star hotel do not expect much from the rooms - they just meet more or less the standard. The good thing is the variety of restaurants and bars in the hotel and really great food.

In this picture you can see our accommodations in the background (That's Eric in the foreground). I stayed in an Expandable (these shelters were collapsible for easy storage and transport) with 2 EW troops, 2 Sensor troops, 2 Fuel Cell troops and a POL troop.
