nasi in front of her home. by cachaseiro in tblisi i stayed at a private homestay run by an eldery lady called nasi. she's a retired german teacher and speaks fluent german and a bit of english. the place is basic, clean and centrally located. the best option in tblisi for a budget traveller Theme: Pension/GuesthousePrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveAddress: mardjanishvili st. 30/92Phone: 95-08-94Directions: 2 minutes walk from the metro stop mardjanishvili. you have to enter a little courtyard to get there, but ask the street vendors for directions if you have trouble locating the place. they helped me finding the place.

welcome to the suite where nothing works. by cachaseiro in most towns in georgia you still have the old goverment run hotels that were made during soviet communism. or rather the remains of them. they are very grandois but extremely run down. i never found one that had running water or electrcity. the rooms are still giant and have antique furniture though.it's a really bizarre feeling to stay in a presidential suite where nothing works. i kinda liked the experience though and the price was always fine. i paid between 4 and 10 EURO's in the places i stayed.

This was the fourth hotel I ended up seeing (well, the third really, since the taxi driver tried to get us to pay to stay at his friends' house). Hotel Beso was definitely the best of the lot. It was in a relatively good location near the port. It was a large knotty-pined panelled room, a western toilet (which, unfortuately, had some unidentified floating object that just wouldn't flush), a hand held shower thing, a sink, and, believe it or not, even a tv. The bed was comfortable enough, and it was quiet there. The staff at the front desk did not speak any English. One front desk person spoke French, though. I don't really speak French, but speak more French than I do Georgian, so that, combined with gesturing almost got we what we wanted. Hortensia by MalenaN In Batumi I stayed at Hotel Sputnik. It is not in the centre of town, but on a hill outside. It is highly recomended though and it easy to take the marshrutka 126from just outside the hotel to the town. If you have been doing a lot of sight-seeing and been staying at very cheap places for some weeks it is also nice just to stay at the hotel or in the suroundings. The rooms are clean with spotless bathrooms, a balkony and TV. I didn't bother to go out to see the sunset over the Black Sea as I was comfortably lying on my bed watching the BBC news. The hotel is situated on a green hill and in the end of June there was a lot of Horthensias blooming. The service is excellent. I asked for the address to a doctor (for my cough) and they took me for free in the hotel car to the doctor (5 lari) and to two different pharmacys (medicine 3,55 lari). Where the marshruthas stop there is a small store selling water, snacks etc. There is also a restaurant. The khachapuri I couldn't eat I got in a doggy-bag to eat later. I can't remember the price but it was not too expensive. Theme: Hotel

The big room at Nasi's by MalenaN Nasi has got a couple of rooms and several beds. When I arrived in 2006 I got a camp-bed for the first nights (and couldn’t sleep), but changed to a better bed when the other woman in the room left. A hot shower is 2 lari extra (it takes about one hour for the heater to warm the water.) A cold shower cost 1 lari (in 2003 it was free). And in 2006 it was 5 lari to use the laundry machine. Nasi let me leave things in the room while I went to Kazbegi (in 2003). Coming from Kazbegi and going to continue with the night train to Batumi it was very nice to come to Nasi’s for a rest and shower first. In 2006 things had changed and Nasi charged 5 lari from someone coming from Kazbegi who wanted to leave his bag there for the day (he had been staying at the homestay earlier). In Armenia I met some people who had stayed at another homestay in Marjanishvili for 15 lari a night (and no extra for the showers). They said it was a very nice place, but unfortunately I can’t remember the name. Theme: OtherAddress: Marjanishvilis Kucha 30/92Phone: 95 08 94 / 94 06 11

Nigel and Vano by MalenaN Vano and his mother Venera are very nice, helpful and welcoming. Their homestay is great. Veanera cooks and breakfast and dinner is eaten downstairs. No one leaves the table still hungry. There is no running water but several buckets of water outside the bathroom. One of the buckets contain drinking water. A bed, breakfast and dinner is 5 dollars (2003). When I was in Tbilisi 2006 I heard the price was 10 dollars. That is still a good deal as all meals are included. When I was there Vano had got a job at the Mariot Hotel in Tblisi, as a door man. So he might not always be in Kazbegi. Theme: OtherAddress: Gergeti, KazbegiPhone: 00995-345-52418

Nasi on her veranda by MalenaN A budget place to stay at in Tbilisi is Nasi's homestay in Marjanishvili. The house is close to Marjanishvilis metro stop. Coming from the metro you turn left in to Marjanishvili Kucha, a small street with fruit sellers and small grocery stores (I love this street, so full of life). Nasi's house is at number 30/92, in the courtyard. Nasi speaks Russian and German and was studying English when I was there. During the whole week I stayed in Georgia (2003) I had a cough. For that Nasi gave me tea with cherries. In June 2003 we were only two tourist staying at Nasi’s, but in July 2006 we were about ten tourist, it was more crowded and Nasi was more fussy and stingy. A bed in 2003 was 5 dollars, in 2006 it was 20 lari (1 dollar was 1,76 lari).

We didn't stay here either. It just looked nice from the outside, on the main road into town, near the port. We wanted to stay somewhere fairly comfortable, take long hot showers, relax, watch tv, nap, and just get our bearings. We thought that Hotel Majestic might be it. But, it wasn't. The room we saw, at some ridiculous rate of 80USD or something, was down a dark hallway, and fairly basic, no better than something you'd see at the Holiday Inn, but darker and danker. We saw another room, a suite, which we liked, well, at least it had some color, but that rate was around 130USD. Certainly not worth it for a night in Batumi during the off-season. (And, not worth it during high season either!) Theme: HotelComparison: more expensive than average
