 | T'bilisi Reviews | Tips 21 - 30 of 56 | | A budget place to stay at in Tbilisi is Nasi's homestay in Marjanishvili. The house is close to Marjanishvilis metro stop. Coming from the metro you turn left in to Marjanishvili Kucha, a small street with fruit sellers and small grocery stores (I love this street, so full of life). Nasi's house is at number 30/92, in the courtyard. Nasi speaks Russian and German and was studying English when I was there. During the whole week I stayed in Georgia (2003) I had a cough. For that Nasi gave me tea with cherries. In June 2003 we were only two tourist staying at Nasi’s, but in July 2006 we were about ten tourist, it was more crowded and Nasi was more fussy and stingy. A bed in 2003 was 5 dollars, in 2006 it was 20 lari (1 dollar was 1,76 lari). As I stayed in Tbilis we stayed in Hotel Iveria. It is a soviet style hotel. Friends told me that this Hotel has been renovated. The house is now a home of many people from Armenia. In hotel Iveria there is often a lack of electricity.
In the soviet style hotels is nearly the same standard. The toilts and other facilities haven't been rennovated since the end of the soviet time. (sea pictures) At the floor there is always a old women who keeps the keys and the passports. Sometimes they are very friendly sometimes they are rough. Staying in a old soviet style is always o.K. but don't extpect to much. Even a good friend with 18 years experience as a taxi driver and with a relative living just a few streets over in the same district spent an hour finding this house. No wonder, it’s down the far extreme of Dolidze street, which by that time devolves into a dirt, and sometimes mud road when the rains come. Our car could barely fit down the street. Though extremely isolated and remote (this is not even close to the ‘city centre’) in the back end of Saburtalo district, the house itself is no comfort either. The house is not fully furnished but only sparsely furnished. The beds are old and uncomfortable and there is not a proper double bed in the entire house. Neither was there any hot water. The front gate is secured with a single, old padlock. Security inside the house was poor as well. When they ‘refurbished’ the staircase leading to the upper floor they forgot to put in any proper safety railing or balustrade. Even worse, the upper floor looks down on the lower floor with a pathetically fragile, slender wooden railing to guard against at least a four meter (12 foot) drop. There isn’t a yard, only a slim entry way with some shrubbery. However, the entry way itself is paved with garish ceramic tiles that become dangerously slippery when wet. I have lived, worked and traveled extensively through the former Soviet Union (nine of the former republics), but have never seen anything that purports to be so much and offers so very little. Think twice. Hotels are not that expensive in Tbilisi, come fully equipped and centrally located. Tbilisi is a nice town by post-Soviet standards and the people can be very friendly and warm. But there are much, much better locations where one can find affordable, decent and safe accommodations. Look elsewhere. Did a homestay orgainsed through the below travel agent. It was with the family opposite the travel agent with 3 very charming sons! Price was 20USD per person per night. Be aware that blackouts are common in Tbilisi.

Along with Marriot Tbilisi and Marriott Courtyard, Sheraton is one of the two western brands operable in Tbilisi. Kempinski, Hyatt, Raddisson and one more western brank already started construction of the hotels. Sheraton has a nice location though a bit further (5-10 minute walk) from the mjor landmarks. If I were a foreigner I would rather have stayed here than at Marriott (located on Rustaveli Ave.) Leave a Comment |
The rooms are large, air conditionning is functionning well, which is very important in summer. The restaurant is very nice and the swimming pool is also nice and clean. Very good location close to the city center. The hotel is great for business travellers and conferences / seminars. I have organised a seminar there and everything was prepared by the hotel. They are flexible and helpful indeed. Also, they do pickup service from the new airport. Wifi is free and fast.
