Good Standard lodging
As our first stop in Iran, we had decided that we must book a place to stay, and selected the Eram. It had good recommendations and was reasonably priced (despite the fact that costs have risen quite sharply in Iran in recent years).
The unreliability of telecommunication meant it took about half a dozen attempts to get a fax through.
The hotel is a modern high rise, located on one of the main shopping arteries, Zand Avenue. It was pretty well known to taxi drivers, though the one that took us from the airport allegedly got it mixed up with Eram Gardens(!), though why we would have needed to visit the garden at 8pm is unclear.
Unique Quality: The upper floors have views outside the windows to the surrounding dry hills
Our room was quite spacious, the lifts worked well, and the staff were helpful and friendy. We organised our tour to Persepolis with one of the staff.
The internet is slow but available - and it comes at a modest fee per hour
There is an attached restaurant. Our price included a good spread for breakfast. We tried the restaurant one evening and found it fine too.
Directions: Main commercial avenue of Shiraz - a short walk to Shahada Square
A very centrally-located 3 stars hotel which costed us 40 dollars for a double, during No Ruuz, so I suspect it's cheaper at other times of the year. Great, friendly and helpful staff - but you better phone to make reservations, as I never got a reply to my emails... They speak great English, too. On their day off the guys double as taxi-drivers, and might take you to Persepolis and nearby ruins, if you ask.
Unique Quality: Although the room was a bit sad-looking (read: dark colours and separate beds) it was very comfortable and had soft mattrasses, which is not always the case in Iran. Basically, we liked it. Another good thing of the hotel is the little bar at the back, on the ground floor. It's in the open air and had large sofas and comfortable cushions. Great to relax and sip some tea.
Thumbs down, however, to the Sarve Naz restaurant (where breakfast is served): it looked really dirty and unappealing. The dead insect that we saw on the floor on day one, was still on the floor we day we left.
Directions: in the centre of town - along the main street
