Saddam's Palaces: Be treated like a meglomanical dictator!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I stayed over night in two of these back when we first came in country. No electricity and no running water. We slept on cots but it was way cool. I slept where Saddam did. I bet he never thought a fat guy from Southern Cal would be sleeping in his crib!

Torture chambers, harems (bordellos), gold plated faucets, numerous pics of Saddam.

Trailer Park!: Build it and they will come
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We built a trailer park for all the soldiers and ourselves. Can't comment on the numbers involved but let's say that it is quite possibly the largest trailer park in the world.

Fast to assemble, uniform (The Army loves that), easy to maintain. It is also a lot less expensive than trying to stick build that many dwellings.

Mud Brick Houses: Haven't changed for 3000 years
  • Tip Rating:
  • Mud brick houses have not changed in design for 3000 years. Mud from the Tigris River is shaped into bricks and bakes in the sun. It is used as the foundation for almost all construction in Iraq.

They are good for the area because the material is inexpensive and plentiful. Is is easy to use and to repair. It offers good insulation and it has the ability to be used to create taller walls which are needed to vent up hot air.

Base X: Home away from home...
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a 5 Star facility.

It is a lovely accommodation that sleeps 10 people. It is air-conditioned and is finished with a nice hard cot to sleep on. Don't worry if you think it might blow over in a sand storm, the creaks and moans of the tent as the wind blows will eventually pass. You must wear earplugs to bed because the tent is right next to a runway. The planes and helicopters only shake the ground several times a night. The nearest restroom facility is a block away, so make sure you use it before you go to bed. Otherwise you'll be getting up in the middle of the night, tripping your way in the darkness.

    Trailer city: living at balad
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • You may want to put sandbags around your room just in case a mortar falls near you.
The trailers are quite nice, however.

Saidoo Hotel: Wonderful stay in Dohuk
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a great hotel in Dohuk close to the central market and the shared car services for travel to places like Arbil. The cost of stay includes a good breakfast including fresh honeycomb to eat with the bread. The rooms are spacious with satellite TV and a bar fridge. The staff is also friendly and helpful and right beside is a pastry shop (same owners as hotel) with delicious sweets.

Great service, friendly and helpful staff and they also have a small staellite photo map of Dohuk which is useful for getting around.

The only downside is that construction of a major highway overpass was happening adjacent to the hotel so once it is up and running, noise may become more of a factor.

    Tent city
  • Satisfaction:
  • The tents were set up pretty nice. Sand bags are the main concern here, and there are plenty of them.
RHIP though, and the trailers are much more comfortable.
